BTS, Katseye and KPop Demon Hunters make AMAs history in 2026

BTS Makes History at American Music Awards

South Korean band BTS has made history by becoming the first Asian act to receive the American Music Awards’ Artist of the Year twice. Their first win in this prestigious category was in 2021, and they have now achieved the feat again. The AMA ceremony, held last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, marked BTS’s return to a major awards show after a four-year hiatus. During this time, the band took a break while its seven members completed South Korea’s mandatory military service.

BTS returned this year with their new album, ‘Arirang’, and delivered an impressive performance at the event. They won all three categories in which they were nominated, securing Best Male K-pop Artist, Song of the Summer for ‘Swim’, and the top award of Artist of the Year. This category saw the group triumph over notable names such as Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Harry Styles, and Lady Gaga.

When accepting the Artist of the Year award, BTS leader RM expressed his gratitude to the band’s fans, known as the BTS ARMY. He said, “We made it once again! Our biggest thanks and gratitude, as always, goes to the armies all over the world. You have stood by us for the past 13 years. It means even more to receive such a big award again after completing military service. Since this award was made by fans’ votes, I am even more grateful.”

Indeed, while nominees at the AMAs are selected based on commercial performance, winners are decided entirely by public ballot. This highlights the strong support that BTS continues to receive from their global fanbase.

K-Pop Dominates the Ceremony

K-pop continued to shine at the American Music Awards, with several acts making significant impacts. BTS’ label partners Katseye were crowned New Artist of the Year, while another group, K-Pop Demon Hunters, had a successful night. Their contributions to the ceremony included winning Best Soundtrack for the song ‘Golden’, which also picked up a second prize for Best Vocal Performance.

The song ‘Golden’, from Netflix’s animated hit film, was named Song of the Year, beating other popular tracks like Taylor Swift’s ‘The Fate of Ophelia’, Morgan Wallen’s ‘I’m the Problem’, and Alex Warren’s ‘Ordinary’.
