The Future of the Audi R8: A Potential Return with Hybrid Power
Audi’s global CEO, Gernot Dollner, has hinted at a possible return of the iconic R8 mid-engined supercar. This next-generation model could be powered by the Lamborghini Temerario’s impressive hybrid V8 engine. Despite tightening emissions regulations, Dollner remains a strong advocate for the V8 engine.
“I’m a big fan of the V8,” he stated, according to Motor1.
Why V8s Are Still Relevant
Audi is currently replacing the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 in its high-performance saloons and SUVs with more efficient V6 hybrids. For example, the new generation of the Audi RS5 has transitioned from a V8 to a V6 plug-in hybrid. Future versions of models like the RS6 are expected to follow this trend.
However, there may still be a place for the V8, as Dollner continues to admire its performance. The Lamborghini Temerario, a plug-in hybrid, uses the same V8 paired with three electric motors. “There’s no restriction to an engine like that,” Dollner said.
The Power of the Lamborghini Temerario
The V8 in the Temerario can rev up to 10,000 rpm, which is higher than any V8 production supercar. The PHEV system delivers an astonishing output of 676kW, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.7 seconds. This powerful combination could easily be adapted for a new-gen R8, as Lamborghinis and Audi R8s have shared platforms in the past.
Production of the current Audi R8 ended in 2024 after an 18-year run. During its lifetime, it was powered by both V8 and V10 engines, which were also used by Lamborghini in its supercars.

Whether a new Audi R8 will actually be produced depends on demand and Dollner’s decisions. Emissions laws may not be as restrictive as some believe. Jeff Mannering, Audi Australia’s boss, mentioned that the growing presence of hybrids and EVs, such as the Q4 and Q6 electric SUVs, allows for the inclusion of a few V8 models without exceeding fleet emissions limits.
“A BEV, a PHEV, an ICE car – if you look at the market, this is why the Q4 and Q6 are so important because they add volume to BEVs, but we need plug-in hybrids as well because of those CO2 targets,” he explained.
