Ibrahima Konate set to depart Liverpool as contract talks fall apart

Ibrahima Konate to Leave Liverpool This Summer

Ibrahima Konate is set to leave Liverpool this summer after failing to agree on a new contract at Anfield. The French international, who joined the club in 2021, has been a crucial part of Liverpool’s defense under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. However, his contract will expire on July 1, and he has not been able to reach an agreement with the club.

Konate was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid last summer but ultimately stayed at Anfield. This led to several months of negotiations between Liverpool and the defender as the club tried to secure his future. It is understood that Liverpool started discussions about a new deal back in 2023, offering improved terms, but they were unwilling to make a decision that could jeopardize their long-term financial stability or pay him significantly more than other players in the squad.

Impact on Liverpool’s Defense

Konate’s departure will leave Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as the only experienced center-backs at Anfield, with both of their contracts set to expire next summer. The club plans to give 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet, who will join from Rennes this summer, the opportunity to start in the first XI. Jacquet has not played since a serious shoulder injury in February but is expected to be fit for pre-season training at Liverpool.

Additionally, the club will provide opportunities to 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni, who joined last summer but suffered a season-ending ACL injury on debut during a Carabao Cup match against Southampton. With faith in these young players and the departure of Mohamed Salah and the injury to Hugo Ekitike, who is recovering from Achilles surgery, it was felt that resources would be better spent strengthening attacking positions.

Konate’s Comments on Future

Konate had hinted in April that a deal was close to being agreed, despite widespread speculation about his potential exit. He stated: “There are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement. I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible, but we are in a good way.”

“For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.”

However, Konate will now leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of June, joining Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson in departing the club. Salah and Robertson were given emotional send-offs during Liverpool’s final match of the season against Brentford last weekend.

Potential New Clubs

Konate has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, PSG, and Real Madrid. Chelsea have downplayed reports that they are interested in the defender, who will join his France teammates today at a pre-World Cup training camp.
