A Changing Dynamic Between Princess Catherine and Prince Harry
The relationship between Princess Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and her brother-in-law, Prince Harry, has undergone significant changes in recent years. Once known for their close bond and shared moments of laughter, the two have become more distant following Harry’s decision to step back from his royal duties in 2020 alongside his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
Before their departure, the siblings-in-law were often seen together, with Harry once admitting that he “liked making her laugh.” In his memoir Spare, he reflected on how their “transparently silly side” connected with each other’s “heavily disguised silly side.”

Those lighthearted moments now seem like a distant memory. A royal expert, Christopher Andersen, has commented on the evolving dynamic between the two, stating that Catherine “would not give up” on her brother-in-law despite the challenges they’ve faced.
According to Andersen, the final break between Catherine and Harry came after a series of events that deeply affected the princess. He noted that even after Harry criticized his brother William in his memoir, Catherine was still willing to try and mend their relationship. However, it was a different incident that ultimately led to the end of their connection.
The Final Straw
The turning point, as revealed by Andersen in his upcoming book Kate! The Courage, Grace and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen, was not the highly publicized Oprah Winfrey interview, but rather a BBC interview in 2025. During this interview, Prince Harry expressed his desire for reconciliation with his family and discussed King Charles’s battle with cancer.
He also mentioned that he did not know “how much longer [his] father has.” This statement, according to Andersen, had a profound impact on Princess Catherine, who was also battling cancer at the time.

In an excerpt provided to US Weekly, Andersen wrote: “The damage was done: seeds of doubt concerning the King’s chances for a full recovery had been sown.” Catherine, who was reportedly “more disappointed than angry” by Harry’s comments, felt the weight of his words.
Andersen suggested that Catherine “must have felt stung by that comment as well, since she is in a situation very similar to the King’s.” He emphasized that having someone publicly imply that you may be at death’s door is “horribly demoralising.”
The Impact on the Royal Family
A staff member of Sandringham described Catherine as “the sweetest, most loving person you could ever know,” but added that even she “has her limits.” Meanwhile, Prince William was reportedly overwhelmed with anger over Harry’s comments.
According to a royal courtier’s testimony cited in Andersen’s novel, William was “apoplectic” with rage. He had already distanced himself from Harry after the release of Spare, and the latest comments pushed him to take further action.
“Now it was time to nail the door shut once and for all, and for the first time Kate, who had worked harder than anyone to mend the rift between the brothers, willingly handed her husband a hammer.”
This marked a significant shift in the dynamics within the royal family, highlighting the deep emotional toll of the ongoing tensions.
