Barcelona Finally Unveil Anthony Gordon in £70m Move
Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon, marking a significant moment in the club’s history. The 25-year-old English winger has joined the LaLiga champions for a reported fee of £70 million, with the deal set to keep him at the Nou Camp until 2031. This move comes after a series of delays that saw the official announcement pushed back from its initial time slot.
Gordon was seen inside the iconic stadium, but the ceremony did not start as expected. By 8pm, there was still no sign of the event beginning. The player, who is also part of England’s World Cup squad, had already passed his medical and was ready to be revealed as a Barca player. However, he had to wait a few more hours for the news to be officially announced.
The delay was attributed to minor paperwork issues, which repeatedly pushed back the presentation. Initially, it was expected that the unveiling would take place on Barcelona’s YouTube channel. Eventually, the confirmation came through a social media post, accompanied by the tagline: ‘Catch him if you can.’
A Dream Come True
Gordon took to the stage during a live stream, dressed in his new kit, and spoke in Spanish before switching to English. He expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I knew it would happen, I have been very calm at the hotel waiting with my family and agents. Very excited. It was hard to wait.”
He added, “I cannot explain (the delay). My part was done. I have been ready for today, I think it was legal things and very small details.” When asked a question in Spanish, he joked about struggling but then continued speaking in the language.
Gordon also shared his thoughts on joining Barcelona, saying, “I found out very late. But as soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was no question. It is the biggest club on the planet, it is something I always dreamed of, it is a dream come true.”

Strong Competition and Personal Commitment
Barcelona managed to beat out strong competition to secure Gordon’s signature, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool both showing interest. His camp had spoken to both clubs, and the framework of personal terms with Bayern had been in place for several weeks. However, the Bundesliga club would not go beyond their £60m valuation.
Gordon emphasized his readiness for the responsibility that comes with wearing the Barca shirt, stating, “I know it comes with a lot of responsibility but I am ready. The shirt holds a lot of weight and I am ready.” He also mentioned his conversation with Hansi Flick, adding, “he is a very nice person, a great man manager.”

A New Chapter in Spain
Gordon will join his England teammates for the Three Lions’ pre-World Cup training camp in Florida following his presentation at the Nou Camp. His arrival has cast further doubt over the future of Marcus Rashford, who has impressed on loan from Manchester United. Despite this, Barcelona still intend to discuss a deal for Rashford with United this week, though their focus may shift to securing another loan rather than a permanent transfer.

A Farewell to Newcastle
Newcastle United shared a heartfelt goodbye video for Gordon on social media. In the clip, he expressed his love for the club, saying, “I love every single minute of playing for Newcastle. Being a part of Newcastle, it’s an incredible club, one I will never forget, and I will be a fan for the rest of my life.”
He also highlighted the support he received from the fans, stating, “On my first day, the people took to me straight away when they didn’t have to. I will never be able to say thank you enough, but thank you very much.”

A Significant Transfer
Gordon’s move to Barcelona is the second most expensive sale in Newcastle’s history, following the British record £125m fee for Alexander Isak last summer. His departure leaves a void in the Magpies’ squad, especially after he finished the season as their top scorer with 18 goals.
As Barcelona looks ahead to the future, the arrival of Gordon marks a new chapter in the club’s journey, with high expectations for the talented winger.
