Aakash Chopra Slams Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Hype

The Rising Star of IPL 2026

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has captured the attention of cricket fans across the country with his remarkable performances in the IPL 2026. At just 15 years old, the all-rounder has been a revelation this season, showcasing fearless stroke play and an explosive batting style that has left opponents stunned. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi has become a standout performer, creating a buzz around his talent and potential.

Despite his young age, Sooryavanshi is now eligible to represent the Indian national team according to ICC age rules. However, the BCCI selectors seem to be taking a cautious approach, carefully managing his progress rather than rushing him into the senior squad. Instead, he has been included in the India A squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which is seen as a stepping stone before potentially being promoted to the national team.

A Call for Patience from Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra, a former Indian batsman, has urged the selectors to take a measured approach when it comes to Sooryavanshi’s career. While acknowledging the teenager’s exceptional talent, Chopra emphasized the importance of not making hasty decisions based on a single outstanding season.

Chopra stated:

“There is a World Cup in two years time. There is time. Yes he is something which you can’t just ignore at all because the IPL is India’s greatest T20 tournament so when a boy he’s a special talent no doubt about it, if he is breaking records shattering records, then he’s doing something special.”

However, he also highlighted the need for careful consideration, pointing out that making changes just for the sake of change could be detrimental. “But then you cannot just make changes just for the sake of changes, just because another boy has done brilliantly well. There is absolutely no problem with that. Very easy for anyone to get dropped, you’ve to fail that test. If you are the topper at this moment, then you can’t just drop the topper thinking that another guy might get more marks.”

The Bigger Picture

Chopra further stressed that Indian cricket is a collective effort and that no single player should overshadow the team’s overall success. He reminded everyone that Sooryavanshi still has a long way to go in his cricketing journey.

“He’s not Indian cricket. I mean, he is part of Indian cricket and that probably hasn’t gone missing with the selectors and they will make the correct call but that can’t happen tomorrow; it takes time. He’s 20 years ahead of time; he doesn’t have to rush.”

Chopra also warned that rushing a young player into the international circuit could lead to increased pressure later in their career. He suggested that allowing Sooryavanshi to develop at his own pace would be the best approach for his long-term growth and success.

The Debate Over a T20I Call-Up

Despite the cautious stance from the selectors, discussions about a potential T20I call-up for Sooryavanshi continue. His dominance over bowlers in the ongoing IPL 2026 has sparked conversations about whether he is ready for the international stage. However, Chopra’s advice serves as a reminder that while talent is important, patience and careful planning are equally crucial in shaping a successful cricketing career.

As the cricketing world watches closely, the focus remains on how Sooryavanshi will handle the challenges ahead and whether the selectors will take the necessary steps to ensure his development is both sustainable and successful.
