Westeros Shines at Taormina Film Festival with ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Teaser

House of the Dragon Season 3 to Premiere in Italy Before Global Release

The second season of House of the Dragon ended in dramatic fashion, with Rhaenyra declaring herself queen and the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, reaching its peak. The clash of dragons in the sky and the breaking of alliances across Westeros set the stage for an era of total war and bloodshed, marking the beginning of the Targaryen dynasty’s decline.

As the conflict intensifies, the third season of the series is set to make a significant global debut. Before it reaches audiences in America, House of the Dragon will premiere in Italy at the Taormina Film Festival.

A Historic Debut at the Taormina Film Festival

According to a report, HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon Season 3 will open the prestigious Taormina Film Festival. The event will feature appearances from cast members Steve Toussaint, Bethany Antonia, Harry Collett, and Phoebe Campbell. The first episode of the season will be shown in the ancient Greek amphitheater of Taormina, with Mount Etna in Sicily providing a striking natural backdrop.

The festival will run from June 10 to June 14, making this the global debut of the season before its U.S. rollout. In the United States, the series will premiere on June 21 at 9 p.m. ET, followed by a release in Italy on June 22. The eight-episode season will continue weekly, leading up to its finale in August.

Festival marketing chief Tiziana Rocca described the show as one of the most spectacular productions in the global television landscape. She emphasized that Season 3 will deepen the existing conflicts, pushing Westeros closer to irreversible destruction. The decision to debut the season in such a historic venue highlights the show’s cinematic ambition and its growing international appeal.

More High Valyrian in Season 3

As the scale of the war expands, the language of the Targaryens will play an even more critical role in shaping the drama. Matt Smith, who portrays Daemon Targaryen, has revealed that Season 3 will feature significantly more High Valyrian, the ancient language associated with House Targaryen.

Speaking at the Omlette Stage at CCXP MX 2026, Smith explained that High Valyrian is complex and challenging to master. However, he confirmed that audiences will hear much more of it in the upcoming season.

“But there’s a lot of that this year. We’ve got a lot of High Valyrian. I can tell you that,” Smith said.

Smith is widely regarded as one of the most convincing speakers of High Valyrian in the franchise. In interviews, he has noted that using the language helps him tap into a more instinctive and authentic side of Daemon Targaryen. It allows him to explore emotional layers that feel distinct from standard dialogue.

High Valyrian also functions as a marker of power and legitimacy within the story. Characters who struggle with it, like Aegon II, appear less authoritative, while fluent speakers reinforce their noble identity. As the war escalates, the language is expected to dominate key confrontations and strategic exchanges.

What to Expect in Season 3

Season 3 promises to be a dark, funny, action-packed, and emotional continuation of the story. With the Targaryen civil war reaching its peak, the stakes have never been higher. The battle for the Iron Throne is no longer just about power—it’s about survival, legacy, and the future of Westeros.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of beloved characters and the introduction of new ones. The season will explore the consequences of the choices made in previous episodes, delving deeper into the political and personal struggles of the Targaryen family.

With its cinematic quality, intricate storytelling, and rich world-building, House of the Dragon continues to captivate audiences around the globe. The choice to debut Season 3 in Italy reflects the show’s growing influence and its ability to connect with diverse audiences.
