Joe Cole urges Xabi Alonso to recruit John Stones for Chelsea

Joe Cole’s Vision for Chelsea’s Future

Joe Cole, a former player for Chelsea, has expressed his thoughts on the potential signings that could help restore a ‘winning culture’ at the club ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival as manager. Alonso is set to take over at Stamford Bridge in July after being appointed as the new manager on a four-year deal. His appointment comes following the sacking of Liam Rosenior last month, making him the top managerial target for the club.

Alonso will now look to strengthen a talented but underperforming squad this summer. However, it remains uncertain what transfer budget he will have to work with in his first transfer window. Cole believes that Chelsea is in desperate need of more experience after a disappointing season where they finished just tenth in the Premier League.

He highlighted two free transfers that could make a significant impact: John Stones and Robert Lewandowski. Both players are available due to their recent departures from Manchester City and Barcelona respectively.

John Stones: A Valuable Addition

John Stones ended his decade-long stint at Manchester City at the end of the season. During his time with the club, he won six Premier League titles, six domestic cups, and the Champions League. The 31-year-old made only eight Premier League appearances this season due to injury, but that did not stop him from being named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Stones’ experience and understanding of high-level football could provide the necessary guidance for Chelsea’s younger players. Cole emphasized that while the current squad has talent, they need experienced figures around them to help them grow and develop.

Robert Lewandowski: A Proven Goal-Scorer

Robert Lewandowski, on the other hand, is searching for a new club after leaving Barcelona after four successful seasons, during which he scored an impressive 120 goals. His goal-scoring record and leadership qualities make him a valuable asset for any team.

Cole believes that bringing in players like Stones and Lewandowski on free transfers could be a smart move for Chelsea. These players don’t necessarily need to play every minute of every game, but they bring with them a wealth of experience and an understanding of winning culture.

The Importance of Experience and Culture

Cole stressed the importance of having experienced players within the group to help the younger ones. He mentioned that all great teams are coached from within their own dressing room, where knowledge and wisdom are passed down over the years.

He also pointed out that it baffles him how some people fail to understand this concept. However, he hopes that the Chelsea owners have recognized the need for such changes and will proceed accordingly.

Challenges Ahead

If the club continues with its current approach, Cole warned that Chelsea might see improvements next year but could still hit the same ceilings. He emphasized that reaching elite levels requires experience, wisdom, and quality.
