Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Historic Win and the Road Ahead
Royal Challengers Bengaluru made history once again by defeating Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final, becoming the first team in the 10-team IPL era to win back-to-back trophies. This achievement highlights the team’s dominance and their ability to maintain a high level of performance throughout the season.
Under the guidance of head coach Andy Flower, RCB had an exceptional season. They finished near the top during the league stage, carrying that momentum into the playoffs and ultimately lifting the trophy. While the celebrations may continue for some time, the management now faces the challenge of ensuring RCB can defend their title in IPL 2027.
To achieve a third consecutive title, RCB will need to make strategic decisions regarding their squad. Every winning team must adapt and evolve, and RCB is no exception. The franchise may have to let go of players who did not deliver enough value despite the team’s success.
Why RCB Need to Avoid “Standing Still”
Many teams in franchise cricket have struggled after defending a title, often due to keeping the same group without addressing weaknesses. RCB’s success in IPL 2026 was driven by several key performances:
- Virat Kohli led the batting charge with 675 runs.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar contributed significantly with 28 wickets.
- Players like Rajat Patidar, Tim David, and others provided crucial impact innings.
Despite these successes, there were moments when the squad looked exposed. Some players failed to convert chances into results. Releasing them could free up funds and allow RCB to bring in new skill sets during the auction.
3 Players RCB May Release Before IPL 2027
Suyash Sharma
Suyash Sharma has been part of successful squads, including Kolkata Knight Riders’ 2024 title win and RCB’s 2025 and 2026 titles. However, his individual performances raise questions about his effectiveness. In 27 IPL matches, he has taken only 18 wickets with an average of 45.22 and an economy rate of 8.75. For a spinner expected to control the middle overs, these figures are not convincing.
RCB invested ₹2.6 crore in him, and releasing him would not be financially crippling. Instead, it could help them target a more effective spinner.
Yash Dayal
Yash Dayal’s situation is different but equally unclear. He was left out of IPL 2026, making his future at RCB uncertain. Despite this, he still sees himself as part of the squad. If RCB does not plan to use him often, releasing him before the IPL 2027 auction could be a smart move, freeing up around ₹5 crore for another fast bowler.
Jitesh Sharma
Jitesh Sharma was a significant pick at the IPL 2025 mega auction, with RCB paying ₹11 crore for him. His first season showed promise, but IPL 2026 was challenging. In 16 matches, he scored only 116 runs at an average of 12.89 and a strike rate of 122.11. For a finisher, these numbers are troubling.
Releasing him would open up budget space for RCB to target another power hitter who can support players like Rajat Patidar and Tim David.
RCB Must Somehow Mix Loyalty With Performance
Winning back-to-back IPL titles is a remarkable achievement, and all squad members deserve credit. However, successful franchises must make tough decisions when necessary. RCB’s management will need to balance loyalty with performance as they shape the squad for IPL 2027.
Players like Suyash Sharma, Yash Dayal, and Jitesh Sharma have talent, but their recent contributions and fit within the squad may force RCB to reconsider their roles. If RCB makes the right calls at the auction and continues to build on their strong foundation, they could achieve something unprecedented in IPL history—three consecutive titles.
