French Open Penalizes Player for Sexist Umpire Comment

Paraguayan tennis player Adolfo Daniel Vallejo has had half of his prize money deducted from the French Open after making controversial remarks about women umpires. The comments came after he lost to a French teenager, and tournament director Amelie Mauresmo confirmed the disciplinary action.

Vallejo criticized Brazilian umpire Ana Carvalho for not managing the home crowd during his second-round match against Moise Kouame. The game, which took place on a packed Court Suzanne Lenglen, ended with Kouame winning 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8).

After the match, Vallejo told the tennis website Clay that “this sort of match needs to be umpired by a man.” He added, “It’s very difficult for a woman to do it.”

Players who reach the second round at the French Open are awarded 130,000 euros ($211,210). However, Mauresmo revealed that Vallejo was fined 65,000 euros, which is roughly half of his prize money. Organizers later clarified that the fine was in dollars, not euros.

“For us, things are very clear. This type of remark is not acceptable,” Mauresmo said while speaking to reporters.

Vallejo claimed that umpire Carvalho failed to control the spectators during the match. He explained, “It has to be refereed by a man, because it’s a very demanding crowd and you need a lot of strength to go against the crowd.”

He also acknowledged that the crowd was “very out of line” but admitted they were supporting their compatriot. “It’s quite an intense crowd and that’s why I was prepared; I already knew it would be like that and, to be honest, it didn’t harm me, but rather strengthened him.”

Vallejo further criticized Kouame, saying that the French player “took up a lot of time on many occasions, lying on the floor or stalling.” He also pointed out that the crowd was shouting for a full minute without any play.

“In a match where the physical aspect matters so much, if you give a player a lot of time he’s obviously going to take advantage of it,” he said.

The Paraguayan player concluded by stating that it’s “also difficult for a referee to manage this situation.” His comments have sparked significant debate within the tennis community, with many calling for greater respect and inclusivity in the sport.
