The Vardys: A Boring Car Crash of a Show

The Vardys have become the latest celebrity couple to offer a glimpse into their lives through a tell-all docuseries, but it seems fans are not entirely impressed with what they’ve seen so far.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed various high-profile families open up about their personal and professional lives. From the Beckhams’ disputes over a Rolls-Royce to the Ramsays building their food empire, the Vardys are now stepping into the spotlight with a three-part series that follows them as they consider moving from Leicester to Lake Garda in Italy — a move that many would see as a significant upgrade.

The first episode of the series focuses heavily on Rebekah Vardy’s most controversial moment: the Wagatha Christie saga. This was when she faced intense online trolling after Coleen Rooney accused her of leaking stories to the press. Rebekah attempted to clear her name but ultimately failed. In an interview with The Times, she described how she felt “treated worse than a paedophile” during the height of the controversy.

Despite the challenges, Rebekah has spoken about finding strength in her resilience, stating that “hell would freeze over” before she would apologize for something she insists she didn’t do. The documentary also showcases the couple and their five children as they navigate the complexities of relocating their entire family to a new country and leaving behind familiar surroundings.

While there are moments of both highs and lows, the series doesn’t seem to have captured the interest of viewers. Social media users have been quick to express their disappointment, with one user, Jade Mc, writing, “The Vardys is the most boringggg show I’ve ever watched in my lifeee omg.” Another, Julia James, questioned the decision to create a documentary about the couple, saying, “Who thought it was a good idea to have a documentary about them?”

Comments like these suggest that the series has not lived up to expectations. One user, Tranquillity, lamented, “That is an hour of my life that I’ll never get back,” while LynnBirt4306 claimed ITV had wasted “some serious money.” Yvonne simply stated, “It’s a no from me.”

The only somewhat positive feedback came from Michelle Varney, who said the show was “good but nowhere near as good as the Furys.” This sentiment is echoed by critics, with The Guardian giving the series a one-star review and predicting it would “disappoint every single person who tunes in.” The Independent agreed, noting that while the show “has all the makings of a reality classic,” it is “deeply dull.” The Telegraph suggested it “badly needs some Wagatha whoomph.”

This new series comes in the same year that Jamie Vardy released a Netflix documentary about his rise to fame, titled Untold UK: Jamie Vardy. That was one of the reasons the couple decided to agree to having cameras follow them during this pivotal time in their family life.

After previously turning down similar opportunities, the Vardys finally said yes. Rebekah explained that it was the perfect time because they were going through a major change — moving to Italy and uprooting their entire family. She told Radio Times, “We had something new to talk about. We had something new in terms of we were moving to Italy, uprooting our whole family, and it was just like, ‘If we’re gonna do it, now is the perfect time to do it.’”

Reflecting on the abuse she faced at football matches, Rebekah added, “I think it’s disgusting, and I think it’s so misogynistic. But at the end of the day, I’m human. Of course, it bothers me sometimes, but in the tough times, I remind myself why I put myself in those situations, and that’s because I’m there to support my husband and that alone.”

The Vardys is available to stream on ITVX now. If you have a celebrity story, video, or pictures, you can get in touch with the .co.uk entertainment team by emailing [email protected], calling 020 3615 2145, or visiting the Submit Stuff page. We’d love to hear from you.
