Tom Holland has opened up about his journey to sobriety, sharing how the first year of his alcohol-free life was the “toughest” of his life. The Spider-Man star spoke candidly on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast ahead of his 30th birthday, revealing that he had a problem with alcohol that affected both his personal and professional life.
“I had a problem,” he said, reflecting on the challenges he faced. “I just couldn’t put it down, and it was affecting my health, my relationships, and my work.”
Holland made the decision to quit drinking in 2022, and since then, he has remained sober. He credited his fiancée, Zendaya, for being a key support in his recovery. She has never consumed alcohol, which Holland noted played an important role in his journey.
“I got through that first year, which I think was the toughest challenge I’ve ever been on,” he admitted. At the time, the couple were reported to be dating, and during that period, Holland realized there were limited non-alcoholic drink options available.
By October 2024, the Odyssey actor launched his own non-alcoholic brand called BERO. He shared that his latest range was inspired by Zendaya, who has never been a drinker. “Z has never drank. She’s never been a drinker… which means she never found the taste for beer,” he told Poehler.
Despite her lack of interest in his product, Zendaya is proud of his efforts. “She’s incredibly proud of BERO, it’s just… she doesn’t enjoy the stuff I’m trying to sell,” he laughed.
To make things more personal, Holland created a new drink specifically for Zendaya—a shandy that is half non-alcohol beer and half lemonade. Fans have praised the gesture, with one commenting: “He made her her own drink. He loves her so much.” Another fan wrote: “Ugh to be loved to the point of invention,” and both comments received over 2,200 likes.
The power couple is set to reunite on screen for two major projects this year. They will appear together in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth film in the Marvel series, as well as Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated drama The Odyssey. The film features a massive cast, including Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson.
On the podcast, Holland expressed his admiration for Zendaya’s acting abilities. “I think she’s the best actor going. I really think she has something special,” he gushed. He also spoke about the importance of working alongside her. “I couldn’t imagine doing what I do without her,” he added.
