New Weight Loss Pill Shows Promising Results in Clinical Trials
A new experimental daily weight loss pill has shown impressive results in clinical trials, with participants losing more than 10% of their bodyweight over six months. The drug, known as elecoglipron, is not only helping people shed weight but also offering benefits for managing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Elecoglipron belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, similar to well-known drugs such as Ozempic or Wegovy. These medications work by mimicking a natural hormone that helps regulate insulin, slows down digestion, and reduces appetite.
The drug has been tested in two phase II studies conducted by AstraZeneca: Solstice and Vista. These trials were published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet. The Vista trial involved over 300 participants from various countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, the UK, and the US.
The findings showed that elecoglipron led to “clinically meaningful and progressive weight loss.” At its highest dose of 75mg, patients lost an average of 10.5% of their bodyweight after 26 weeks, compared to just 0.6% in the placebo group. This improved further to 11.8% at 36 weeks. In addition to weight loss, the drug was found to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
Experts believe that the actual weight loss potential of elecoglipron could be even greater than what was observed in the trials. Researchers noted that the sustained reduction in bodyweight up to 36 weeks without evidence of a plateau suggests that maximal weight loss might not have been reached by six months.
Melanie Davies, a professor of diabetes medicine at the University of Leicester and principal investigator for the Vista trial, emphasized the significance of these results. She stated:
“Despite huge progress in the field of obesity management, significant opportunity remains to deliver broader, sustainable and more meaningful health benefits for the billions of people living with obesity or weight-related complications.”
She added that the Vista results show that people receiving once-daily oral elecoglipron achieved significant weight loss as well as lower blood pressure and systemic inflammation, demonstrating its potential to treat both obesity and its related complications.
In a separate phase II trial called Solstice, researchers analyzed data from over 400 people in the US who were overweight or had type 2 diabetes. The study found that elecoglipron was more effective at lowering blood sugar levels and helping patients lose weight compared to those taking a placebo.
They also noted that the amount of weight lost increased with higher doses of the drug after 26 weeks. Almost 75% of people taking elecoglipron lost at least 5% of their bodyweight after six months, compared to just 20.2% in the placebo group.
Side Effects and Convenience
The most common side effects reported across both trials were nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting. However, one notable advantage of elecoglipron is that it does not require strict fasting times. Unlike other weight loss pills, patients do not need to take it on an empty stomach or wait 30 minutes before eating.
Sharon Barr, executive vice president of bioPharmaceuticals research and development at AstraZeneca, expressed confidence in the drug’s potential. She said:
“The progression of elecoglipron is an important step in delivering a differentiated weight management portfolio, offering monotherapies and combinations, designed to address the biological complexity of obesity and comorbidities that can be tailored to individual needs, enabling people to live healthier lives.”
With phase III trials now underway, the future of elecoglipron looks promising. If successful, this drug could offer a new and effective treatment option for individuals struggling with obesity and related health issues.
