Slug Slog: Bears Lifted by Beau’s Blazing Strike

Beau Webster Makes History with T20 Century

Aussie international allrounder Beau Webster has made history this season by becoming the top scorer in England’s Vitality Blast tournament. His standout performance came when he smashed his first-ever T20 century for Warwickshire, helping them secure a six-wicket victory against Somerset.

The match took place at the Taunton ground, a venue known for being a batter’s paradise. Webster, 32, delivered an exceptional display, scoring 112 off just 61 balls. His innings was marked by nine fours and seven sixes, showcasing his ability to dominate the opposition.

Webster, affectionately known as the “Slug from Snug,” has become a fan favorite not only with his Midlands county but also back home in Tasmania. Despite missing out on a century a week earlier when he was caught on 97 while trying to clear the ropes against Northamptonshire at Edgbaston, he made up for it this time around.

In the chase, Webster took a single off fellow Australian Daniel Sams as Warwickshire aimed to chase down Somerset’s total of 4-215, which was anchored by Jordan Hermann’s unbeaten 90. Webster had earlier taken the crucial wicket of England batter Tom Banton in his one over that went for 14 runs. He then formed a dominant partnership of 145 in 12.5 overs with Dan Mousley (71no) in the chase.

Initially, Webster approached his half-century cautiously, reaching it off 35 deliveries. However, as the rain started, the Somerset bowlers struggled with the wet ball, and Webster seized the opportunity to unleash his power. He needed just 19 more balls to reach his century, which he achieved off 54 deliveries.

Somerset were relieved when Lewis Gregory finally dismissed Webster at long-off with 25 runs still needed off 13 balls. However, Mousley ensured the victory, with Chris Woakes seeing them home.

“It was a great win for the boys, we needed it,” said Webster about the Birmingham-based Bears, who had lost their previous five matches and are struggling to advance in the Blast. “We’ve been pretty poor. I think everyone can put their hand up on that, but we’re going really well in the county championship (where Warwickshire are challenging for the title in second place). We can take plenty of momentum from this.”

Despite the team’s struggles, Webster has been in excellent form. He is now the top-scorer in the Blast with 288 runs in his six knocks, averaging 48, and is the second-most prolific six-hitter with 14 maximums, behind only Derbyshire’s Aneurin Donald.

Another Australian batter in good form is Sussex veteran Daniel Hughes. He recently hit two county championship centuries in successive matches and has been consistent in the T20 Blast as well. Hughes played a key role in guiding the home side to a seven-wicket win over Kent at Hove, scoring an anchor-role knock of 41no off 37 balls in their 3-135.
