Meta’s flagship platforms, Facebook and Instagram, were suffering a massive global outage on Friday, leaving millions of users locked out of their accounts and experiencing widespread technical disruptions.
Users across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East reported being logged out of their profiles, greeted by blank feeds, or met with repeated “unexpected error” and “query error” messages. The disruption severely impacted Facebook’s desktop site, its mobile application, Messenger, and portions of Instagram’s feed and login systems. Downdetector had outages reported across the US, with high-volume reports in cities including New York City, Chicago and San Francisco.
Live outage trackers, including DownDetector, showed sharp spikes on both platforms, and user reports ranged from being unable to load the homepage to being repeatedly told their passwords were incorrect. Because the issue is server‑side, switching devices or using a VPN does not restore access.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote on X on Friday morning that the company is “aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services,” adding that Meta is “working on it.”
has reached out to Meta for comment on the reported outage.
What is the Facebook ‘Error Query’ Message?
The “Error Query” message appearing across Facebook suggests a server‑side failure in Meta’s authentication or data‑retrieval systems. Users say they were abruptly logged out and then blocked from signing back in, even when using correct credentials.
This type of error typically indicates a backend malfunction rather than a user‑level problem, meaning no amount of troubleshooting—clearing cache, reinstalling the app, or switching networks—will fix the issue until Meta resolves it.
What Parts of Facebook Were Down?
Reports showed widespread failures across:
- Login systems, with users told their passwords are wrong
- News Feed, which loads as a blank white screen
- Messenger, which logs users out or shows “offline” status
- Desktop and mobile apps, both returning server errors
Users from Egypt, Portugal, Norway, and multiple U.S. cities—including Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Fort Worth, Texas—said they couldn’taccess any part of the platform.
What Parts of Instagram Were Down?
Instagram appeared to be experiencing a partial outage, with some users reporting:
- Frozen or empty feeds
- Inability to refresh content
- Failed logins
- Delayed or disappearing DMs
While Instagram outages are often resolved within 30 minutes, major disruptions can ripple across Meta’s network for hours. Past incidents have been triggered by AWS failures, server‑side glitches, and large‑scale Meta infrastructure issues.
Is Facebook Messenger Not Working?
Messenger was one of the hardest‑hit components. Users said they were logged out without warning and appeared “offline” to friends.
Some reported that messages fail to send or load, while others cannot open the app at all.
When Did Service Return to Facebook and Instagram?
Historically, global outages of this scale are resolved within one to three hours. Meta’s engineering teams typically deploy fixes in waves, meaning some regions regain access sooner than others.
Until Meta confirms the cause, users are advised to avoid scammers, verify outage status on DownDetector, and wait for service to be restored, as no device‑level fix will resolve a server‑side failure.
As of around 10:30 a.m. ET, issues with Meta social media platforms began to decline, per DownDetector.
