2026 T20 WC: Zimbabwe Departs India Amidst Mideast Chaos, West Indies Awaits

The Zimbabwe cricket squad, having concluded their campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup, has finally received clearance to depart from India. They were the first team in Group 1 to be eliminated from the tournament, with the West Indies following suit. The Zimbabwe Cricket Board confirmed on February 5 that the team has begun their journey home to Harare, though the departure will be staggered across several batches.

Navigating Travel Disruptions

Originally slated to depart on March 2, the team’s travel plans were complicated by the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Iran and US-Israel. Their intended transit through Dubai via Emirates flights became unfeasible. Consequently, new arrangements have been made, rerouting the squad through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as an alternative pathway.

Zimbabwe Cricket took to their X account to announce the updated travel situation:

“Zimbabwe Cricket confirms that the Zimbabwe senior men’s team participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 are on their way home from India after the International Cricket Council secured alternative travel arrangements following recent transit disruptions.”

The board further elaborated on the logistics:

“Due to flight availability and revised routing, the squad will return to Harare in batches. The first group of players departed India today, Wednesday, while the final group is scheduled to leave on Friday afternoon.”

In contrast, there are no immediate travel plans confirmed for the West Indies team, who are also awaiting their turn to head home.

Zimbabwe’s Historic T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign

Zimbabwe’s participation in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was nothing short of historic. The team achieved a significant milestone by reaching the Super 8 stage for the very first time in their T20 World Cup history. Under the astute leadership of captain Sikandar Raza, the African nation displayed remarkable form in the group stage, remaining undefeated and topping Group B.

A pivotal moment in their campaign came with a commanding 23-run victory over the 2021 champions, Australia. This triumph continued Zimbabwe’s impressive unbeaten streak against Australia in T20 World Cup encounters. Throughout the group stage, Blessing Muzarabani was a standout performer with the ball, consistently troubling opposition batsmen. Offensively, Brian Bennett provided crucial impetus at the top of the order with impactful knocks.

Zimbabwe secured decisive wins against Oman and Sri Lanka. Their match against Ireland, unfortunately, was abandoned due to rain, but this result was still sufficient to confirm their qualification for the Super 8s. However, the second round presented a sterner challenge, as the team faced defeats against formidable opponents in the West Indies, India, and South Africa.

Despite the eventual outcomes in the Super 8s, the tournament was a platform for individual brilliance and future promise. Sikandar Raza etched his name in the record books, becoming the first Zimbabwean batter to surpass 3,000 runs in men’s T20 Internationals. Furthermore, Brian Bennett showcased his potential with a career-best innings of 97 runs against India, a performance that underscored Zimbabwe’s emerging talent and optimistic outlook for the future of their cricket.
