Roosters’ Enforcer: “Not That Strong”

Naufahu Whyte: The Roosters’ Unsung Gym Warrior and On-Field Powerhouse

Naufahu Whyte burst onto the scene last year, earning a reputation as the Sydney Roosters’ brutal forward pack enforcer. Yet, the young gun insists he’s far from the most dominant athlete gracing the club’s hallowed halls. As the Roosters gear up for an ambitious 2026 NRL season, Whyte is focused on elevating every facet of his game, even if it means admitting he’s not the strongest lifter in the gym.

“Every time I finish a year, I kind of reset. I always think I can do better in every aspect,” Whyte shared, looking ahead to the new campaign. The 23-year-old, who had a career-best 2025 season, is driven by a relentless pursuit of improvement.

However, as the Roosters prepare for their round-one clash against the Warriors this Friday, Whyte revealed a surprising truth: diminutive utility player Connor Watson, and even some of the club’s outside backs, still out-muscle him in the weights room.

“Gym strength-wise, I’m not that strong,” the imposing front-rower confessed with a chuckle. “People think I lift heavy, but I just tell them, ‘I’m not too heavy, bro, 12, 12.5kgs’. It’s light work. You’ve even got outside backs who can lift heavy, Connor Watson lifts heavy, even though he’s that small, he lifts more than me.”

This admission highlights Whyte’s unique brand of strength. For him, true power isn’t measured in kilograms lifted, but in the ferocity and impact he delivers on the field. He excelled last year, stepping into the significant role of leading the forward pack, a position previously held by the Roosters’ most capped player, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves.

Whyte’s on-field prowess was undeniable in 2025. He averaged a career-best 148 running metres per game. Among all NRL forwards, only Payne Haas and Addin Fonua-Blake managed to average more metres gained after contact – a testament to Whyte’s ability to break tackles and drive through defensive lines.

The affable Kiwi attributes his on-field success not to gym repetitions, but to sheer heart and relentless hard work. “When we play, it’s kind of a different story. When I run that ball, when I’m going in for a hit or tackle, I’m going to make sure they feel that impact,” he declared. “It’s just all heart, man. If you believe in yourself and know that you can go get the job done, you back yourself to go do it.”

This mindset is precisely what Whyte believes will be crucial for him to replicate his formidable form in 2026. The Roosters have bolstered an already formidable roster with the additions of Daly Cherry-Evans and Reece Robson, setting high premiership aspirations.

The Path to Continued Success

When asked about his approach to the upcoming season, Whyte emphasised a return to fundamentals and consistency. “Back to work. Back to my routine, back to consistency of what I’ve been doing. I just keep my head down and keep working hard, man. There’s no secret recipe,” he stated.

He remains grounded despite the accolades received last year. “I got a lot of raps, a lot of people talking about me last year but I know for myself, I haven’t even scratched the surface level.”

A Grateful Return to New Zealand

There’s perhaps no better way for Whyte to recommence his upward trajectory than against an imposing Warriors pack, spearheaded by his Kiwis teammate James Fisher-Harris. Whyte, who grew up in New Zealand and was part of the Warriors’ junior system before being scouted by the Roosters at 17, holds a special connection to the club.

“It’s always a grateful experience when you get to go back to New Zealand and play against the Warriors,” he said. “I’m keen for the match-up there.” This homecoming game promises to be a significant moment for Whyte, offering him a chance to showcase his development on familiar soil against a tough opposition. His journey from a promising junior to a key enforcer for the Roosters is a story of dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to impact, both in the gym and, more importantly, on the field.
