Perry Poised for Test Return as Aussies Eye Series Dominance
The Australian women’s cricket team is on the cusp of a significant victory, having secured a commanding 3-0 sweep in their One Day International series against India. This dominant performance has propelled them to a four-point lead heading into the highly anticipated one-off Test match in Perth, scheduled to commence this Friday. A major talking point surrounding the Test is the potential return of superstar all-rounder Ellyse Perry, whose presence on the field is generating considerable excitement, though with a notable caveat regarding her bowling.
Perry was sidelined for the entirety of the ODI series due to a quad strain, a setback that also affected teammate Kim Garth. While her batting prowess is undoubtedly a massive asset, her bowling capabilities remain uncertain for the upcoming Test.
Australian captain Alyssa Healy, who will be retiring from international cricket after this Test match, expressed optimism about Perry’s recovery. “We’ve got a very rough idea of what (the XI is) going to look like, and obviously Ellyse Perry is the key one,” Healy stated. “We’ll just assess her as we go; she trained really well yesterday, so it’s looking really promising.”

However, Healy also indicated that the team might be looking at debutants for the Test, suggesting that the final lineup is still being carefully considered. “But I dare say there will be debutants, so we’ll have to wait and see who that will be.”
When pressed on Perry’s bowling availability, Healy alluded to the all-rounder’s potential role, humourously suggesting, “Hopefully, she will just stay out there and bat all day instead.” This statement strongly implies that while Perry is likely to feature in the crucial Test, her bowling workload might be significantly managed or entirely omitted to ensure her full fitness.
Teenage Talent in the Mix for Test Debut
Among the players vying for a coveted Test debut is 19-year-old fast bowler Lucy Hamilton. The talented left-armer recently received her ODI cap from captain Healy, signalling her growing importance within the squad. Healy acknowledged the allure of a left-arm pace bowler gracing the historic WACA ground.
“I mean, we’ve loved seeing left-arm quicks run in here at the WACA over the years,” Healy commented. “I am excited if she gets her opportunity to see her do her thing; she’s an incredibly mature 19-year-old and was well-deserved of her ODI debut.”

The prospect of Hamilton earning her “baggy green” – the iconic Australian Test cap – has the captain eagerly anticipating her potential contribution. “If she happens to get the baggy green tomorrow, I am excited to see what she can bring,” Healy added. This indicates that Hamilton is a strong contender to be included in the playing XI for the one-off Test, potentially adding a new dimension to Australia’s bowling attack.
Healy’s Farewell and Focus on Team Success
Alyssa Healy is set to conclude her illustrious white-ball career on a high note, having recently delivered a spectacular unbeaten 158 off just 98 balls in Hobart. As she approaches her final international match, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter was asked about the possibility of another century in her farewell game.
With a characteristic chuckle, Healy responded, “I am not going out there to make a duck.” She elaborated on her mindset, stating, “If three figures come up, then so be it, but at the end of the day, I just want to contribute to the team’s success, and what that looks like, we’ll wait and see.”

Healy also highlighted the team’s collective excitement for the Test match, acknowledging the favourable conditions and the players’ readiness to perform. “We’ve got some batters who will have some very fond memories of batting here, so I think everyone is excited for that opportunity.” This sentiment underscores the unified focus on securing a victory in the Test, ensuring Healy’s swansong is a memorable one for the entire Australian side. The team’s strong performance in the ODIs and the potential return of key players like Perry position them as formidable opponents as they prepare to face India in the solitary Test match.
