Kogi deploys surveillance drones, warns criminals to flee

Kogi State Introduces Advanced Drones to Enhance Security Measures

Kogi State has taken a significant step forward in its security initiatives by unveiling two PH20 unmanned aerial systems (UAS) or drones. This move is aimed at strengthening the state’s security operations and sending a clear message to criminals that they are no longer welcome in the region. The launch event took place on Monday at Chari Maigumeri Barracks in Lokoja, with notable attendance from high-ranking military officials, heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community representatives.

Governor Ahmed Ododo described this initiative as a strong commitment to ensuring the safety of every resident in Kogi. He warned criminal groups, stating, “Your time is running out.” The governor emphasized that these drones would provide an added layer of surveillance, making it impossible for criminals to find hiding places. He also highlighted the state’s strategic position between the North and South, which makes it a critical area for security efforts.

Ododo mentioned the progress made over the past two years, including the recruitment of 2,752 vigilantes, the establishment of a Quick Response Unit, and improved operational equipment. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs for their support and praised the State Security Adviser, Cdr. Jerry Omodara (retd.), for reshaping the state’s security framework.

The governor encouraged citizens to share intelligence, emphasizing that silence can protect criminals while cooperation ensures community safety. He also called for continued vigilance and active participation from the public in maintaining peace and order.

Military Officials Praise Kogi’s Initiative

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended Kogi for setting a pace for Nigerian security during the ceremony. Represented by Maj. Gen. Olusegun Abai, COAS’s Chief of Transformation and Innovation, he noted that the drones, procured by the state government, would enhance intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and military operations across Kogi. Shaibu praised Governor Ododo for the confidence placed in the Nigerian Army and highlighted the importance of the drones alongside the recent deployment of 21 Battalion, which would expand troop reach and enable decisive actions against terrorists, bandits, and other criminals.

“The PH20 UAS, obtained through the Office of the National Security Adviser, will serve as a force multiplier, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making,” Shaibu said. He linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s national security agenda, emphasizing the importance of federal-state synergy for sustainable peace in North-Central Nigeria.

Collaboration and Technological Advancements

The Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Kasim Sidi, and the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, commended the governor for fostering inter-agency cooperation and positioning Kogi at the forefront of security innovation. Sidi emphasized that the drones would boost operational effectiveness and spur local technological growth for safer communities.

The State Security Adviser, Cdr. Omodara, noted that the drones would provide real-time aerial surveillance, terrain mapping, and rapid intelligence across forest corridors and borders. Operators from the Nigerian Army, Police, and DSS have completed three months of training to operate the drones, interpret data, and follow strict rules of engagement.

Omodara stressed that technology would complement, not replace, human courage, while boosting inter-agency synergy. He also called on citizens to provide credible information and praised the governor for his “foresight and courage.”
