Hamilton: Personal Peak Ahead of 2026 F1 Season

Lewis Hamilton is feeling more optimistic than he has in years as he heads into the new Formula One season, expressing excitement about his prospects with Ferrari. After a challenging debut season with the Italian outfit, where he failed to secure a single podium finish and ended up sixth in the drivers’ standings, the seven-time world champion is eager for a fresh start. His previous campaign was particularly tough, with qualifying performances dipping significantly in the latter part of the season, seeing him struggle to break into the top 13 in the final four races.

However, the landscape of Formula One has been dramatically reshaped by a major overhaul of regulations. These changes encompass modifications to engines, chassis, fuel, and tyres, promising a significantly different racing experience for all teams. Ferrari has shown promising signs during pre-season testing, demonstrating impressive mileage and pace during the initial test in Bahrain, building anticipation for the upcoming campaign.

Hamilton himself feels he has put the difficulties of the previous year behind him, having dedicated the off-season to a comprehensive personal reset. He elaborated on this during the second Bahrain test, stating his commitment to leaving the struggles of last year in the past.

“I really felt that I spent a lot of time rebuilding over this winter, refocusing, really getting my body and my mind to a much better place,” Hamilton explained. “In general, just making sure that I’m able to arrive feeling better. And I would say I generally feel personally in the best place that I’ve been in a long, long time.”

Beyond his personal well-being, Hamilton is also encouraged by the team’s early performance with the new machinery. “And then with the car, I think we’ve started off quite well so far,” he commented. “And it’s an exciting time with this new generation of car as well, because it’s all brand new.”

The prospect of the new regulations has already sparked considerable discussion within the paddock. Max Verstappen, for instance, has voiced his reservations, suggesting that the increased emphasis on energy management detracts from the core essence of Formula One racing.

Despite the complexities introduced by the new rules, Hamilton has embraced the opportunity to contribute to the development of Ferrari’s 2022 challenger. Unlike his previous season, where he inherited a car already in development, this year he has been actively involved in the simulator work for the past 10 months.

A Deeper Connection to the New Ferrari

This hands-on approach has fostered a stronger sense of ownership and connection to the car. “Last year we were locked into a car that ultimately I inherited,” Hamilton admitted. “This is a car that I’ve been able to be a part of developing on the simulator for the last 10 months. And so a bit of my DNA is within it. I’m more connected to this one for sure.”

Ferrari has not celebrated a drivers’ championship title since Kimi Räikkönen’s triumph in 2007. Last season was particularly disappointing for the Scuderia, as they entered the year with high expectations of contending for both championships, only to find themselves a distant fourth-best team.

Learning from the Past, Building for the Future

Hamilton, now 41, believes that valuable lessons have been learned from the previous season, and he was always prepared for the project to require time to yield success. His faith in the team remains unwavering, stemming from his belief in their capabilities, which was the primary reason for his move.

“My belief in the team is still absolutely the same. I understand the faith in this team and what they’re capable of and that’s why I joined the team,” Hamilton stated. “I knew it wasn’t going to be an overnight thing where we’d have success immediately. That’s why I signed a longer deal because I knew more often than not it’s a process.”

He further highlighted the positive internal shifts within the team. “I feel like we’ve also learned a huge amount from last year as a team and there have been changes that we’ve made,” he said. “I think we’re working better together than ever before so I’m excited for that moving forward.”

The new era of Formula One cars, with their revised aerodynamics and increased emphasis on ground effect, presents a fresh challenge for all drivers. While some, like Verstappen, have raised concerns about the impact on the racing spectacle, others, like Hamilton, see it as an opportunity for reset and innovation. The coming season promises to be a fascinating test of adaptability and engineering prowess.
