Tottenham Imposes Lifetime Bans for Nazi Salutes
Tottenham Hotspur has taken decisive action, handing down indefinite bans to three supporters who were identified making Nazi salutes during a Champions League match in Germany. The club’s swift response follows a significant fine from UEFA for discriminatory behaviour.
The offensive gestures occurred during Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in January. UEFA subsequently fined the North London club $49,400 for “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” stemming from the incident.
In a statement released by the club, Tottenham confirmed the identification and subsequent banning of the individuals involved. “We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans,” the club stated. They further emphasised that the actions of this “disgusting behaviour of a minority of so called fans on the night is in no way reflective of the values of our club and its supporters.”
Beyond the Nazi salutes, Tottenham also incurred a separate fine of $3705 from UEFA for instances of fans throwing objects during the same match.
Furthermore, UEFA had previously deferred a one-game ban on the club selling tickets to its fans for away games in European competitions. This ban is suspended for a probationary period of one year, meaning any further discriminatory behaviour could see this suspended punishment enacted.
