How John Mulaney Lifted Olivia Munn After Cancer Diagnosis

Olivia Munn has shared her journey through a breast cancer diagnosis and the unwavering support she received from her husband, comedian John Mulaney. The 45-year-old actor was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in April 2023, which led to a series of life-changing surgeries, including a double mastectomy, an ovariectomy, and a partial hysterectomy. Throughout this challenging time, Munn said that Mulaney was always by her side, offering both emotional and practical support.

Munn spoke about her experience on CBS Sunday Morning, where she described her husband as “the best person in the world” to her. The Newsroom actor and SNL alum began dating in 2021 and married in 2024. She emphasized how Mulaney’s sense of humor helped her stay positive during her treatment.

“He wanted to come to every single doctor’s appointment,” Munn recalled. “He had his little notebook. You know? And he’s got his notebook that he writes all of his ideas for jokes and anything that comes to him through the day.”

She added, “You know, having the humor to go through it and having someone who’s so funny, it really– it just lightens everything.” Munn credits her husband’s presence and laughter as a vital part of her recovery process.

The X-Men: Apocalypse actor was diagnosed with breast cancer despite having no symptoms, no family history, and no warning signs. She attributes her early detection to a free online Q&A called the Lifetime Risk Assessment test, which prompted her to seek further medical attention.

In March 2024, Munn shared her story on Instagram, detailing the process of discovering her cancer. After undergoing an MRI, ultrasound, and biopsy, doctors found Luminal B cancer in both of her breasts. This type of cancer is considered aggressive and fast-moving, leading to four major surgeries.

“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next,” she wrote. “I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options.”

In her post, Munn expressed deep gratitude for Mulaney’s support, writing: “I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect.” She also highlighted how he was there before each surgery and when she woke up, always placing framed photos of their son Malcolm so it would be the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes.

Mulaney and Munn are parents to Malcolm, who is 4 years old, and their daughter Mei Mei, who will turn two in the fall. Their bond has been tested and strengthened through this difficult chapter, showcasing the power of love, support, and resilience.
