TOPEKA (KSNT) – In the heart of the Capital City, a vibrant celebration of creativity is taking place as local older adults showcase their artistic talents. The Topeka Presbyterian Manor recently launched its annual Art is Ageless exhibit, which kicked off on Monday, April 6. This event highlights the work of artists who are 65 years or older, proving that age is not a barrier to artistic expression.
“As you age, there’s a certain perception that we’re just sitting around playing bingo,” said Carol Maynard from the Topeka Presbyterian Manor. “Senior living residents are actually very creative.”
This year’s exhibit features around 50 older adults who have contributed their unique works of art. One of the standout participants is 90-year-old Carolyn Sailors, who has been embroidering since her youth. She learned the craft from her mother, grandmothers, and aunts, spending countless hours with them as a child.
“I learned to embroider when I was a little girl from my mother, my grandmothers, and my aunts,” Sailors shared. “I would sit with them and do what they did.”

The Art is Ageless exhibit will conclude with a reception on Thursday, April 9, where the winner will be announced. The selection will be made by professors from Washburn University, and the winning artist will be featured on a calendar. While the prize is an exciting opportunity, many of the participants emphasize that the true reward lies in the chance to share their work with others.
“It’s a pretty amazing program because it brings artists together,” Maynard explained. “It’s not only for the artists at the reception, but for our residents, and for people who just want to learn about art.”
For Sailors, the joy comes from seeing how people react to her work. “I like to see the expression on people’s faces when they see my work,” she said. “Most everyone likes my work, and it makes me feel good.”
The exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between April 7 and 10 in the rotunda area of the Topeka Presbyterian Manor, located at 4712 SW Sixth Ave. Visitors can experience the talent and dedication of these senior artists firsthand.
