Capstone Art Show | Marshall University School of Art & Design

A Busy Time for Students at Marshall University’s School of Art & Design

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The end of the academic year is a particularly hectic time for students enrolled in Marshall University’s School of Art & Design. As they approach the culmination of their studies, many are preparing for their Capstone Exhibition, an event that showcases the culmination of their creative efforts and academic journey.

Gallery Director Sophia Celdrán recently visited First Look at Four to speak with two students, Abby Thompson and Audrey Vance, about their work and what they have been focusing on during this critical period.

The Capstone Exhibition: A Final Showcase

The Capstone Exhibition serves as a final project for students in the School of Art & Design. It allows them to demonstrate their skills, creativity, and understanding of their chosen discipline. For many, it is the first time they present their work in a professional gallery setting, making it a significant milestone in their artistic development.

Abby Thompson and Audrey Vance have been working diligently on their projects, each exploring different themes and techniques. Their work reflects not only their individual styles but also the diverse range of artistic practices available within the program.

Student Perspectives

During their visit to First Look at Four, Thompson and Vance shared insights into their creative processes. They discussed the challenges they faced while developing their pieces, as well as the inspiration behind their choices. Both students emphasized the importance of experimentation and the value of feedback from their peers and instructors.

Thompson’s work, for example, focuses on the intersection of traditional and digital media. She has been exploring how technology can enhance or transform classical art forms. Her pieces often incorporate elements of collage, painting, and digital design, creating a unique visual language that speaks to contemporary issues.

Vance, on the other hand, has been delving into the realm of sculpture and installation art. Her work often addresses themes related to identity, memory, and space. She uses a variety of materials, including found objects, to create immersive environments that invite viewers to engage with her pieces on multiple levels.

The Role of the Gallery Director

Sophia Celdrán, the Gallery Director, plays a crucial role in supporting students throughout the Capstone process. She works closely with them to ensure their exhibitions are well-organized, visually compelling, and accessible to the public. Celdrán also helps students navigate the practical aspects of mounting an exhibition, such as selecting the right venue, promoting the event, and managing logistics.

Her presence at First Look at Four highlights the importance of community engagement and the value of sharing student work with a broader audience. By participating in such events, students gain valuable experience in presenting their work and communicating their artistic vision.

Looking Ahead

As the Capstone Exhibition approaches, both Thompson and Vance are eager to share their work with the public. They see this as an opportunity to reflect on their growth as artists and to connect with others who share their passion for art.

For students at Marshall University’s School of Art & Design, the Capstone Exhibition is more than just a final project—it is a celebration of creativity, dedication, and the future of the arts.
