A New Level of Confidence
Matt Fitzpatrick is entering the Masters with a level of confidence he has never experienced before. The 31-year-old Englishman, currently ranked sixth in the world, has been on a remarkable run of form that has seen him capture several major tournaments. His recent success includes winning the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and finishing second at the Players Championship, followed by a victory at the PGA Tour Valspar Championship.
Fitzpatrick admits that this is the most confident he has ever felt heading into the Masters. However, he emphasizes the importance of keeping expectations low while maintaining high confidence. “It’s definitely the most confident I’ve been,” he said. “I wouldn’t say that means I’m going to go out there and play well. The key is obviously to have as low expectations as possible and as high a confidence as possible.”
Momentum and Balance
The 2022 US Open champion also highlighted the momentum he has built over the past few weeks. He noted that the experience of winning a tournament just before the Masters has given him a sense of continuity in his game. “The weird thing is winning and then having two weeks off and then you come in again,” he explained. “I think winning the week before is a bit more on a roll. You’ve got the same swing feels and whatnot.”
Despite the positive momentum, Fitzpatrick acknowledges that there are challenges in maintaining consistency after a break. “In that two weeks off, there’s a few things that just felt like were maybe a little bit different,” he said. “It’s just managing that and making sure I’m on the right track.”
Experience and Learning
This will be Fitzpatrick’s 12th appearance at the Masters, and he has made 10 consecutive cuts in previous years. His best finish was seventh in 2016. The experience of playing at Augusta National is something he values greatly. “The experience is the biggest thing here,” he said. “The more you can learn about the golf course, the better.”
Fitzpatrick pointed out that each hole presents unique challenges, particularly when it comes to positioning the ball and understanding where to place the pins. “There’s so much to learn on every different hole, particularly where to put the pins and where to miss around the greens,” he added. “As well as just looking at the history of the event and what holes you can be a little bit more aggressive on and which holes you need to play smart.”
Mental Preparation
Fitzpatrick has also worked closely with his psychologist to find the right balance between confidence and overconfidence. “It just goes back to the expectation standpoint,” he said. “It’s taking the confidence from that, that things have improved so much from where they were last year, but as well as having those expectations you can’t have the high expectations.”
He emphasized that while he is playing well, golf is an unpredictable sport. “I’m playing really well, but golf is golf. It can change quickly or it can continue for how it is.”
Growth and Evolution
Fitzpatrick believes that each year brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. “Every year I feel like I’m a completely different player to the one before,” he said. This mindset reflects his approach to the game and his continuous pursuit of improvement. As he prepares for the Masters, Fitzpatrick is focused on embracing the moment, staying grounded, and enjoying the journey.
