CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — While trying to understand how fans were reacting to Illinois’ March Madness journey coming to an end, WCIA 3 encountered former Illinois basketball player Brett Melton at Champaign’s Gameday Spirit.
Melton, a graduate of Mahomet-Seymour High School, was part of the 2001 Elite Eight team coached by Bill Self. He spent the final two years of his college career playing for San Diego.
Although Saturday’s loss to UConn wasn’t the outcome he hoped for his former team, Melton emphasized that the players on the court are now part of the Illini basketball family for life.
The Importance of Family and Culture
Brad Underwood shared his thoughts and feelings after the Final Four loss, highlighting the emotional impact of the game. Melton reflected on the significance of the moment, noting that while as a player you always want to win and be the best, as you grow older, you come to appreciate the deeper meaning behind the sport.
“We went to Indy for the game. Got to see all the former players from the Flying Illini to the ‘05 team, to some of the guys I was on the team with. It was cool to see everybody come back and support this current group,” Melton said. “In the moment and as a player you want to win and you’re competitive and you want to be the best. But as you get older you realize it’s family. It’s culture and we’re just there to support them just like those who were there to support us.”
Looking Ahead for Illinois Basketball
Melton expressed his excitement about the future of Illinois basketball, stating that he believes the program is well-positioned to continue attracting top-tier talent from around the world. His confidence in the program’s direction reflects a deep understanding of what it takes to build and sustain a successful team.
