Springtime in Troy: Frear Park Golf Course Reopens for 2026 Season
TROY, N.Y. — As the days grow longer and the air warms, the Capital Region is gearing up for a new season of outdoor fun at one of its most beloved spots: Frear Park Golf Course. This year, the course will officially open on Friday, marking the start of the 2026 season.
The opening day will be celebrated with a special ceremony at 9 a.m., where Mayor Carmella Mantello will join members of the Troy High School and Lansingburgh High School golf teams. The event will feature Mantello hitting the first drive of the season, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter for the park.
Major Upgrades and Improvements
This year’s opening comes with a range of exciting upgrades that are set to enhance the visitor experience. A total of $6 million is being invested into the park, with improvements including:
- New, accessible playground equipment
- Tennis and pickleball courts
- Updated signage throughout the park
- Improved accessibility for hiking trails
- Enhanced parking areas
- New public grills for visitors
Mayor Mantello expressed her enthusiasm for the changes, stating, “Frear Park is a true gem of our city and the entire Capital Region. As we welcome everyone back for the 2026 season, we are also continuing to invest in the park’s future – ensuring an even better experience for golfers and visitors alike for years to come.”
Revitalizing the Park Pub
In addition to the golf course enhancements, the park is also undergoing a transformation of its former Park Pub restaurant. Demolition of the old space is expected to begin within the next month, paving the way for a fresh start.
Following a request for proposals (RFP) process, the city has selected Troy native Brad Stevens to operate dining services at Frear Park. He will manage On the Green Pub and Grub, which will be located in a temporary tent and event space during the 2026 season. Stevens will also be responsible for the future, permanent restaurant, which is set to open in the summer of 2027.

Stevens shared his excitement about the opportunity, saying, “It’s an honor to be selected through this process and to continue being part of Frear Park’s future. Opening day is always an exciting time, and we’re proud to operate once again ‘On The Green Pub and Grub’ for the 2026 season. We’re especially grateful for the opportunity to not only serve guests this year, but to be part of the long-term vision for a permanent restaurant and event space. We’re looking forward to building something special here for the Troy community.”
