Shresta Iyer’s Social Media Post Sparks Controversy
Shresta Iyer, the sister of cricketer Shreyas Iyer, has found herself at the centre of a social media controversy following a video she posted after the Punjab Kings’ match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. The game was eventually washed out, but the incident sparked a wave of reactions online.
In the video, Shresta was quoted saying, “Saade Punjabiyan da dil vadda hunda hai, lo de ditta ek point,” which translates to “Punjabis have a big heart. Take the one point.” This statement quickly went viral and led to significant backlash from fans and critics alike.
Apology and Clarification
In response to the growing criticism, Shresta took to Instagram to address the situation. She clarified that her intention was never to offend anyone and emphasized that her comments were simply a way to celebrate the game and support her brother, Shreyas Iyer.
“I don’t understand why the hatred is being spread. It’s just a game. The videos are just for fun, and I am here to support my brother. I will continue to do that. No hate for any team, it’s just a game. Everyone should take it sportingly,” she said in a video shared on Instagram Stories.
Shresta further explained that she wasn’t trolling anyone and that her approach was purely about celebration. She reiterated her commitment to supporting her brother without any negative intentions.
“I understand aggression. I wasn’t trolling anybody. It was my way of celebration, and I am going to continue doing that. I am just here to say no hate for anybody. Only love is a game. We all should have fun. The rivalry should show, no matter what. There were no personal attacks, just chill. Peace out, guys,” she added.
Context of the Match
The match between the Punjab Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders had an unusual twist. The Punjab Kings managed to reduce the Knight Riders to 25/2 in 3.4 overs before rain disrupted the game. The decision by KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane to bat first on a wicket in overcast conditions also came under scrutiny.
Despite the washout, the Punjab Kings maintained their unbeaten record in IPL 2026 after winning their first two games. They are set to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on April 11, where they will aim to continue their successful campaign.
Fan Reactions and Public Discourse
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the role of social media in sports and the potential for misunderstandings. Fans and commentators have weighed in, with some defending Shresta’s right to express her support for her brother, while others criticized the tone of her message.
This event highlights the challenges that athletes and their families face in the digital age, where every word and action can be scrutinized and interpreted in various ways. It also underscores the importance of clear communication and understanding in maintaining positive relationships between teams and fans.
As the cricketing world continues to follow the developments, the focus remains on how such incidents are handled and the lessons that can be learned from them. The incident involving Shresta Iyer serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between celebration and respect in the world of sports.
