A New Artistic Collaboration for Sunderland
A group of three artists, including Ross Millard from the band The Futureheads, has been given the task of creating a unique artwork installation that will become a key feature of a new major city venue. This collaboration brings together Ross with video artist and sound designer Jeremy Bradfield and creative technologist Ben Lawrence. Together, they are working on an installation titled ‘Timepiece’ for the Culture House.
The artwork is an audio-visual installation that makes use of large, state-of-the-art screens and speakers. It will be positioned in the atrium of the new building and will appear on the hour every hour for a full year. While it serves as a practical clock for visitors, it also acts as a tribute to the city of Sunderland.
An Evolving Tribute to Sunderland
‘Timepiece’ is designed to change and evolve over time, using a mix of archive images, footage, and audio, field recordings, and composed music. The installation aims to tell the stories of Sunderland, celebrating its past, present, and future. Each hour, a special moment is created to engage visitors and offer them a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage.
Residents of Sunderland have the opportunity to contribute their own images to the project. The artists are seeking photographs of people in front of well-known landmarks, those celebrating festivals, images of people in their work uniforms, or photos and videos of special family moments.

Involving the Community
This initiative encourages the local community to play an active role in shaping the artwork. By contributing their personal stories and memories, residents can help create a living archive that reflects the identity and spirit of Sunderland. The project not only highlights the city’s cultural significance but also fosters a sense of ownership and connection among its people.
The Culture House is set to become a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. It will serve as a space for meetings, activities, and the presentation of innovative artistic showcases. The installation by Ross Millard and his collaborators will enhance the experience of those who visit the venue, adding a unique and dynamic element to the atrium.
A Celebration of North East Talent
Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of Economy and Place at the Council, expressed his excitement about the project. He stated, “We’re delighted to announce three fantastic artists, all of whom have a connection to the North East, who will come together to bring this installation to Culture House. The building’s atrium will be a spectacular, welcoming space for residents and visitors and this will add to their experience. As well as being a place for people to meet and take part in activities, Culture House will bring exciting, cutting-edge showcases to the city.”
How to Contribute
Those interested in contributing their images can do so through the Living Archive online portal. This platform allows individuals to share their personal connections to Sunderland, helping to shape the evolving narrative of the artwork. The project is a testament to the power of community involvement and the importance of preserving local stories through art.
By combining technology, creativity, and community input, ‘Timepiece’ promises to be a lasting and meaningful addition to the Culture House. It will continue to evolve and inspire for years to come, serving as both a functional clock and a celebration of Sunderland’s cultural legacy.
