Michigan basketball’s rise signals the start of ‘Power 2’ era

The Rise of the Big Ten in College Basketball

Indianapolis — The term “Power 2” has never felt more fitting. Michigan’s 69-63 victory over Connecticut in the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game on Monday not only secured a historic win for the Wolverines but also marked the Big Ten’s first title since Michigan State claimed it in 2000. This triumph was the culmination of a tournament where the Big Ten dominated, with half of the Final Four teams coming from the conference. Illinois made its debut in the Final Four since 2005, and the conference also had half of the Elite Eight teams.

This success is part of a broader trend that has seen the Big Ten emerge as a powerhouse in college basketball. The conference has consistently produced top-tier teams and players, and this year’s championship game was a testament to that strength. Michigan’s win was not just about individual talent but also about the depth and coaching within the Big Ten.

A Conference on the Rise

The Big Ten’s dominance isn’t limited to just this season. Last year, Florida won their first national title since 2007, and the SEC had half of the 2025 Final Four, thanks to Auburn’s impressive run. The SEC also claimed half of last year’s Elite Eight, showcasing the growing competition among conferences.

However, the Big Ten’s performance this year highlights a shift in the landscape of college basketball. With Michigan’s victory, the conference has solidified its position as one of the most competitive in the country. This success is due in part to the strong programs within the Big Ten, which have consistently produced high-quality teams and players.

Key Factors Behind the Big Ten’s Success

  • Strong Coaching: The Big Ten is home to some of the best coaches in college basketball, who have developed winning cultures within their programs.
  • Depth of Talent: The conference has a deep pool of talented players, many of whom have gone on to play at the professional level.
  • Competitive Schedule: Teams in the Big Ten face some of the toughest schedules in the country, which helps prepare them for the challenges of the NCAA tournament.

Looking Ahead

That’s a far cry from the 2023 Final Four that included San Diego State, Florida Atlantic and Miami all making first-time appearances.

How quaint.

What we’re starting to see is that football money pays off.

The two biggest leagues, when it comes to raking in enormous amounts from broadcast contracts and revenue sharing distributions, are the only two leagues to have at least one team in each of the past three Final Fours. Winning the last two titles could be a sign of more of this to come.

That’s good for Kentucky’s desire to climb back to a championship contender, but may mean schools like Louisville face a tougher challenge.

This is more than just having money to pay for rosters. Deep pockets mean having the money for better resources.

It allowed Michigan coach Dusty May to keep Brandon Gilbert, who served on his staff the past six seasons including his time at Florida Atlantic, as a special assistant to the head coach.

As the Big Ten continues to build on its recent successes, the future looks bright for the conference. With continued investment in facilities, coaching, and player development, the Big Ten is well-positioned to remain a dominant force in college basketball for years to come.

The Wolverines’ victory is not just a milestone for Michigan but for the entire Big Ten. It serves as a reminder of the conference’s rich history and its potential for even greater achievements in the future. As fans continue to follow the journey of their favorite teams, one thing is clear: the Power 2 is here to stay.
