Slot urges Liverpool to harness history in clash with PSG

A Legacy of Resilience

Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, has emphasized the importance of drawing from the club’s storied history during this challenging season. He believes that despite the recent setbacks, the team can find hope and strength in their past achievements. Slot highlighted that every time the team faces a setback, they have the ability to rise again.

Liverpool is set to face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, following a string of losses in their last two games and 15 matches across all competitions. Slot acknowledged the inconsistency in performances and results throughout the season, stating, “It is completely true that performances and results have been inconsistent the whole season.”

However, he pointed to the team’s ability to secure victories against top-tier teams, including wins against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Aston Villa. As he prepares for the European champions, Slot finds inspiration in Liverpool’s rich history as he strives to turn around their season and restore their fortunes.

Liverpool has won the European Cup six times, with some of those triumphs coming after remarkable comebacks. One notable achievement was a season when they finished 37 points behind the Premier League champions, which gives Slot hope for the current year.

“The answer lies in the history of Liverpool,” Slot said. “In tough moments, they stand up again. We’ve had a lot of tough moments, stood up a few times then fallen down again. We have to show that mentality again to keep going and keep picking yourself up after disappointment.”

He added, “This club has also shown it can do very special things in difficult moments and if we can bring this game to Anfield, as we saw last season and many times, most recently against Galatasaray, we played the best game of our season.”

Slot noted that while the answer is already in the history of Liverpool, it is easier said than done. He mentioned the team’s performance against Manchester City, where they only showed their best form for 20 minutes, usually only five or 10 minutes.

“This group has shown it can come back after setbacks. Apart from the quality my team has, my team have shown many times in big games – apart from two at the Etihad – that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe.”

Alexander Isak’s Return

Slot also mentioned that Liverpool’s record signing, Alexander Isak, could make his belated first appearance of 2026 against Paris Saint-Germain. However, it would likely be as a substitute.

Isak broke a leg while scoring against Tottenham in December and has undergone ankle surgery. He is expected to be on the bench for the match. Slot explained, “He has finished close to a week of team training sessions so he can play a part, otherwise I wouldn’t take him. I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we felt we could not get a performance of him yet.”
