What to Know About the Houston Art Car Parade

The Art Car Parade is making a triumphant return, drawing hundreds of intricately decorated vehicles ranging from cars to skateboards and more. These artistic masterpieces will be taking over Downtown Houston, creating a vibrant spectacle that celebrates creativity and innovation.

This year marks the 39th annual downtown stroll, with free events kicking off this Thursday ahead of the main parade on Saturday, April 11. The event has grown significantly since its inception, attracting between 200,000 and 300,000 spectators. With over 250 participants, the Houston Art Car Parade has become the largest celebration of “art cars” in the world. It’s not uncommon to see dozens of organizations, public and private schools, and community groups participating each year. Every year, artists from Houston and beyond continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, raising the bar for creativity and artistry.

The origins of the parade trace back to 1984 when Kit and Carl Detering donated a 1967 Ford station wagon to the Orange Show Foundation. Houston artist Jackie Harris transformed the vehicle into a moving piece of art using about $800 worth of paint and plastic fruit, creating the iconic “Fruitmobile.” That same year, local artist Ann Harithas organized “Collision” at Lawndale Art Center, which featured art automobiles that quickly began appearing on Houston streets.

The Houston Art Car Parade made its debut in April 1988 under the leadership of the Orange Show with just 40 vehicles. What started as a small gathering has evolved into the massive display of automobile artwork we see today.
