Charli Theron Speaks Out Against Timothée Chalamet’s Comments on Opera and Ballet
Charlize Theron has made it clear that she is not a fan of Timothée Chalamet’s recent remarks about opera and ballet. The 50-year-old actress, known for her role in the film Bombshell, expressed strong disapproval of Chalamet’s comments during an interview with The New York Times.
Theron, who stars in the upcoming action thriller Apex as a rock climber being hunted by a ruthless killer played by Taron Edgerton, spoke passionately about the importance of dance and other traditional art forms. She described dancers as “superheroes” who endure intense physical challenges without complaint.
During the interview, Theron said, “Dancers are superheroes. What they put their bodies through in complete silence.” Her words were a direct response to Chalamet’s earlier statements, which he made during a March CNN/Variety town hall.

Chalamet, who has been seen on vacation in Miami, Florida, without his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, claimed that he does not want to work in either opera or ballet because “no one cares about this anymore.” He later tried to soften his stance by saying, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there.”
However, Theron was not impressed. She called his comments “reckless” and emphasized the need to support these art forms. “That was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time,” she said.
Theron also highlighted the future of the performing arts, stating, “In 10 years, AI is going to be able to do Timothée’s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn’t s*** on other art forms.”

Her strong stance on the issue comes from personal experience. Theron revealed that her days as a budding ballerina were “borderline abusive.” She endured intense training that caused severe blisters, which bled through her shoes. “You don’t get a day off,” she said of the relentless schedule.
“Dance taught me discipline. It taught structure. It taught hard work. It taught me to be tough,” Theron continued. “And that’s something that you have to practice every single day, the mindset of just, you don’t give up, there’s no other option, you keep going.”
Theron studied ballet in South Africa from an early age, with the intention of making it her career. She moved to New York as a teenager to study at the Joffrey Ballet School until a knee injury ended those dreams. She then turned her ambitions to acting.
Meanwhile, Chalamet, who has been in a relationship with Jenner for roughly three years, hasn’t issued an apology as of mid-April. He has been spotted in Miami, Florida, relaxing and lounging on the beach with friends.
The Oscar nominee is enjoying a vacation after his appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to promote Dune: Part Three.
