OVAC Honors 70-Year Legacy of Local Sports Journalism

A Legacy of Excellence in High School Sports

In a recent ceremony held in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) honored Doug Huff, a legendary sports journalist whose contributions to high school sports have left an indelible mark on both the local and national levels. Known for his exceptional storytelling and deep passion for athletics, Huff has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Influential People in the History of High School Football.

For over seven decades, Doug Huff has brought his unique perspective to the world of high school sports, shedding light on an area of the industry that often goes unnoticed. His work has not only elevated the visibility of high school athletes but also helped shape how their stories are told and remembered.

“He didn’t just cover high school sports; he defined how they are remembered. Today we honor not just a writer but a pioneer, a historian, and a guardian of the game. Please join me in recognizing and celebrating Doug Huff.”

Since the age of 12, Huff has transformed the way readers and fellow writers engage with athletics. His dedication to capturing the essence of high school sports has made him a beloved figure in the community.

Friends and colleagues describe his contributions as more than just journalistic. They believe his work has helped preserve local history and document decades of on-the-field action.

“From the media world to the OVAC Sports Museum – your impact will last for generations to come. No one, absolutely no one deserves more recognition than you. Thank you for taking the Ohio Valley and me for a run.”

Tom Rataiczak, director of the OVAC Sports Museum

Huff expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received during the event, acknowledging the kindness and respect shown by those who have worked with him over the years.

“I was really pleased at the turn out here and the reception – and all the kind words from people I really respect and have worked with over the years, that makes you feel great. I just want to express my thanks to being able to do this and having such a blessed life for over 80 years.”
