The Impact on Childcare Centres in Australia
At least 40 childcare centres operated by G8 Education are set to close across Australia. This decision comes as the provider addresses the challenges that have affected the entire sector, particularly after a decline in occupancy and trust following serious child safety incidents at various childcare centres. These incidents have involved multiple operators, including G8, leading to increased scrutiny and concern within the community.
While the specific centres that will be closed have not yet been disclosed, the announcement highlights the growing difficulties faced by the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector. According to a statement from G8, the sector is undergoing significant changes and uncertainty, driven by a mix of socio-economic factors. These include shifting family demands, lower birth rates, and evolving operating conditions that have made it harder for providers to maintain stability.
Occupancy rates in the ECEC sector have dropped compared to 2024 and 2025. This decline is attributed to families facing sustained affordability pressures, falling birth rates, and an increase in long-day care supply. Additionally, confidence in the sector has been shaken due to the serious child safety incidents reported across various operators.
G8 Education is one of several operators in Victoria who have been impacted by historical allegations of child abuse involving Joshua Dale Brown, a convicted paedophile. These allegations have further contributed to the loss of public trust and added to the challenges faced by the sector.
In addition to these issues, operators like G8 are also dealing with rising costs due to economic pressures. They are also navigating changing compliance regulations and a more complex operating environment. Despite these challenges, G8 remains focused on ensuring safety, providing high-quality education and care, and maintaining disciplined execution and efficient management.
On April 24, occupancy at G8 centres saw a 7 per cent drop compared to the same day last year, falling to 56.4 per cent. Year-to-date occupancy also decreased by 7.9 per cent to 56.1 per cent, highlighting the ongoing struggles within the sector.
