Don’t Answer That: Nicks Hints at Controversial Umpire Decision in Showdown 59

Adelaide found itself at the center of another contentious and pivotal umpiring decision during Showdown 59, a match that once again highlighted the unpredictable nature of football. With just minutes left on the clock, Wayne Milera appeared to be on course for what would have been the game-sealing goal. However, the moment was undone when the umpires called a push by Josh Rachele on Port Adelaide’s Logan Evans on the goal line—a rarely enforced free kick.

The Power quickly responded with their own goal, taking the lead with only 46 seconds remaining on the clock. It was then that Brayden Cook delivered the decisive blow, kicking the match-winning goal in what many described as an instant classic between the two teams.

Adelaide’s coach, Matthew Nicks, chose not to dwell on the controversial call during the post-match press conference when asked about it alongside best-on-ground winner Sam Berry. Instead, he opted for a lighter tone, joking to Berry, “Don’t answer that.” He acknowledged the spectacle of the game, saying, “What a spectacle it was. There are things we’re all going to comment on. I’m glad it finished the way it did.”

One topic that Nicks was more than happy to discuss was the emergence of Brayden Cook as a key player in 2026. The 23-year-old has had a rocky start to his AFL career, often fluctuating between the side and the bench. However, this season, Cook has found consistency, playing all eight games and averaging 17.9 disposals per match. His performance in Friday night’s game was arguably his most impressive yet, with 21 disposals, four clearances, one goal assist, and the crucial match-winning goal from 45 meters out, on the run.

Nicks praised Cook’s development during the pre-season, noting that the young midfielder has made significant strides in his game. “Poise and finishing—that’s Brayden’s weapon,” Nicks said with a laugh. “He’s had that since he arrived at the club as what we thought was a 13-year-old. We knew he would take some time to round his game out. He’s always had high-end talent with the ball in hand, but it was a matter of getting him in the right positions and understanding the contest part of it. I think we’ve all seen it this season that he’s taken his game to a new level.”

Cook’s leadership during the off-season was also highlighted by Nicks, who noted that his influence extended beyond the field. “His leadership in the off-season was as good as some of our actual recognized leaders. He took a young player under his wing, and now he’s getting reward for it, and so are we. It’s so pleasing.”

Nicks expressed confidence in Cook’s ability to deliver under pressure, stating, “To have the ball in his hands at that point, I think most of us would be reasonably confident that he was going to finish the job.”

Despite the victory, the Crows faced challenges on the field. Key defender Jordon Butts (groin) and key forward Taylor Walker (hamstring) were sidelined due to injuries. Both players are likely to miss next weekend’s clash with Richmond at the MCG.
