Don’t Answer That: Nicks Hints at Controversial Umpiring in Showdown 59

Adelaide found itself once again at the center of a contentious and pivotal umpiring decision during Showdown 59, a highly anticipated match between the Crows and Port Adelaide. As the game neared its conclusion, Wayne Milera appeared to have secured a crucial goal for the Crows. However, this moment was quickly overshadowed when the umpires ruled that Josh Rachele had pushed Logan Evans on the goal line, resulting in a rarely called free kick.

Port Adelaide swiftly capitalized on this opportunity, scoring a goal of their own just 46 seconds before the final whistle. This move allowed them to take the lead, setting the stage for Brayden Cook’s dramatic match-winning goal. Cook’s goal, taken from 45 meters out on the run, proved to be the decisive moment in what turned into an instant classic between the two teams.

Adelaide’s coach, Matthew Nicks, was cautious when addressing the controversial umpiring decision during the post-match press conference. When asked about the incident involving Rachele alongside Sam Berry, who was named best-on-ground, Nicks humorously responded, “Don’t answer that,” as he laughed with Berry.

Nicks emphasized the spectacle of the game, stating, “What a spectacle (the game was), is really what it was. And there are things we are all going to comment on. I’m glad it finished the way it did.”

One topic that Nicks was more than willing to discuss was the emergence of Brayden Cook as a key player for the Crows in 2026. After a career marked by fluctuations in form and position, the 23-year-old has finally found his stride this season. He has played in all eight games, averaging 17.9 disposals per match. His performance in the recent showdown was arguably his most impressive yet, with 21 disposals, four clearances, one goal assist, and the critical match-winning goal.

Nicks highlighted that Cook’s progress during the pre-season has been significant, contributing to his improved performance on the field.

“(Poise and finishing) that’s Brayden’s weapon, Brayden has had that since he arrived at the club as what we thought was a 13-year-old,” he said with a laugh.

“We knew he would take a bit of time to round his game out. He has always had high-end talent with ball in hand, it was a matter of getting him in the right positions and getting him to understand the contest part to it. I think we have all seen it this season, especially, that he has taken his game to a new level.”

Nicks also praised Cook’s leadership during the off-season, noting that it was comparable to some of the team’s established leaders.

“He took a young player under his wing and now he is getting reward for it and so are we, so it is so pleasing. To have the ball in his hands at that point, I think most of us… would be reasonably confident that he was going to finish the job.”

The Crows’ victory came at a cost, as key defender Jordon Butts (groin) and key forward Taylor Walker (hamstring) were sidelined due to injuries. Both players are likely to miss the upcoming clash with Richmond at the MCG.
