Jack de Belin Considers Future with PNG Chiefs
Parramatta Eels forward Jack de Belin has opened the door to the possibility of playing for the PNG Chiefs in 2028. The 35-year-old, currently under a one-year contract with the Eels that includes an option for 2027, will become a free agent in November, allowing him to explore opportunities with other clubs.
De Belin, a former State of Origin player, has had a rollercoaster career, including a period of absence from the sport due to off-field issues during his time at the St George Illawarra Dragons. Despite this, he has accumulated 257 games in his career and continues to be a presence on the field. While his form with the Eels this season has been inconsistent, he has not publicly indicated that he is considering retirement.
In a recent media appearance, de Belin acknowledged the potential of joining the PNG Chiefs. He praised the club’s recent signing of Jarome Luai, stating that it could serve as a catalyst for other players to follow.
“You never know, everything’s a possibility,” he said. “In regards to the Chiefs, that’s an awesome signing getting Jarome Luai — that’s a massive signing. To be honest, I think a lot of boys are going to see that now that he’s done it, he’s like a bit of the trailblazer, and I think a lot of players are going to follow him across there.”
The Eels have the option to retain de Belin for 2027, but it remains uncertain whether they will exercise this. De Belin has returned to the team after dealing with injuries and is working to regain his best form. He has expressed his enjoyment of playing for the Eels and his desire to stay with the club.
However, the Eels have a strong group of young middle forwards, including Sam Tuivaiti and Charlie Guymer, which may reduce their need for de Belin. Additionally, Dylan Walker, the club’s other lock option, is also nearing the end of his career, and it is unclear how many years Junior Paulo has left.
Despite these factors, de Belin remains a valuable asset both on and off the field. His experience and leadership could prove beneficial to the Eels, especially as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming seasons.
As the rugby league landscape continues to evolve, de Belin’s potential move to the PNG Chiefs highlights the growing interest in international opportunities. With the right support and development, such moves could provide new pathways for players looking to extend their careers.
For now, de Belin remains focused on his current role with the Eels, aiming to contribute to the team’s success while keeping his future options open. Whether he stays in Australia or makes the move to Papua New Guinea, his journey continues to captivate fans and fellow players alike.
