Liverpool target right-footed Salah replacement to aid Isak

Liverpool’s Search for a New Winger to Support Alexander Isak

Liverpool is currently exploring options for a new winger who can create scoring opportunities for Alexander Isak, as they seek a replacement for Mohamed Salah. The club has been grappling with the challenge of finding a player who can fill the gap left by Salah, whose performance has not met expectations since his £125m move from Newcastle last summer.

Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer, has only managed to score four goals in 21 games so far. This lack of goal-scoring has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike. In contrast, during the 2024-25 season at St James’ Park, Isak formed a highly effective partnership with Jacob Murphy, with the Swede scoring seven goals that were assisted by the right-footed right winger.

Salah, on the other hand, is known for his left-footed style of play, often cutting inside to take shots. Manager Arne Slot has highlighted the importance of having a supply line to Isak, particularly when considering a successor to Salah, who is expected to leave the club in the summer.

Slot mentioned that the team is missing the delivery from the right flank that Trent Alexander-Arnold used to provide before his move to Real Madrid. He explained:

“That is definitely part of thinking about the replacement because since I have been here, and it is the same at a lot of clubs, it is mainly a left footer on the right and a right footer on the left. I have seen Alex scoring also a lot from crosses which were played from the right, right footed, Trent Alexander-Arnold crosses if you want to call them like that. So that is definitely part of how we are looking at things, but we try to sign the best possible available player who we can afford.”

Strategic Approach to Signing a New Player

While some clubs may focus on signing the best player in the world for a specific position, Liverpool takes a more pragmatic approach. Slot emphasized that the club aims to find the best available player within their financial constraints. This strategy ensures that the team remains competitive while managing their resources effectively.

The search for a new winger is not just about finding a player who can provide assists but also one who can adapt to the team’s playing style. The ideal candidate would be able to deliver accurate crosses from the right flank, similar to how Alexander-Arnold used to do, to support Isak in front of goal.

Future Plans and Expectations

As Liverpool looks to the future, the focus remains on strengthening their attacking options. The club is aware that the right winger will play a crucial role in unlocking the potential of Isak and other forwards. This is especially important as the team prepares for the upcoming season, where consistency and creativity in attack will be key to success.

The manager’s comments highlight the importance of balancing ambition with realism. While the club is open to signing top talent, they are also committed to making informed decisions that align with their long-term vision.

In summary, Liverpool’s search for a new winger is driven by the need to enhance their attacking capabilities and support Alexander Isak. The club is taking a strategic approach, focusing on finding the best available player who can contribute to their success both on and off the pitch. As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on how Liverpool navigates this challenge and strengthens their squad for the seasons ahead.
