Malaysia loses to China in Thomas Cup semis as title drought persists

Malaysia’s Thomas Cup Hopes Dashed by China in Quarter-Finals

Malaysia’s long-standing quest to end a 34-year wait for the Thomas Cup title faced a major setback as they were defeated 3-0 by defending champions China in the quarter-finals. The match took place on Friday at Forum Horsens in Denmark, marking another chapter in Malaysia’s struggle to reclaim the prestigious team title, which they last won in 1992.

China advanced to the semifinals with a dominant performance, aiming to defend their title. For Malaysia, the loss was a heavy blow, especially after they had hoped to make a strong start against the tournament favorites. However, world No. 1 Shi Yuqi quickly put China in control, showcasing his exceptional skills and composure during the opening singles match.

After 67 minutes of intense badminton, Shi Yuqi overcame Leong Jun Hao with a score of 21-10, 16-21, and 21-9. His sharp attacking play and tight net control were key factors in his victory. Jun Hao struggled in the first game, but he showed resilience in the second, staying composed and forcing errors from the top-ranked Chinese player during longer rallies.

Despite this brief resurgence, Malaysia could not sustain the momentum. In the deciding game, Shi took an early lead while Jun Hao rushed key points and found it difficult to catch up. After the match, Jun Hao reflected on his performance, stating:

“I felt that after losing the first game, I just had to stay positive and keep pushing myself point by point. After getting into the third game, it was not a good start. I may have rushed a few points, and he came up with some sharp attacks.”

The 26-year-old added that he gave everything, even in defeat, showing his determination and sportsmanship.

Doubles Pair Fails to Deliver

Malaysia’s hopes then shifted to the doubles match, where the world No. 2 pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik faced the world No. 5 combination of Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang. Despite a hard-fought battle, the Malaysians could not secure a win. They were level for much of the first game but failed to close out key points, eventually losing 22-24.

In the second game, Liang and Wang increased the pressure, pushing Aaron and Wooi Yik onto the back foot. The Malaysians struggled to match the pace of the rallies and ultimately lost 14-21.

Singles Match Ends in Defeat

With the doubles match also lost, Malaysia needed a strong performance from their second singles player, 22-year-old Justin Hoh, who faced Li Shifeng. Although Hoh showed promise early on, he could not match the consistency and attacking quality of the Chinese player, resulting in a 14-21, 13-21 loss.

China Advances to Semifinals

With all three matches lost, China now advances to the semifinals, where they will face either Denmark or Thailand. Their performance has demonstrated why they are considered one of the strongest teams in the competition.

As the Thomas Cup continues, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see if any team can challenge China’s dominance. For Malaysia, the loss marks another difficult chapter in their pursuit of the coveted team title.
