Lando Norris Claims Pole Position for Miami Grand Prix Sprint Race
Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has secured pole position for the Miami Grand Prix sprint race, marking a significant achievement for the McLaren team. Norris completed the Hard Rock Stadium circuit with a best time of one minute 27.869 seconds, outpacing last year’s sprint pole sitter and current title leader by 0.222 seconds. This result highlights the effectiveness of McLaren’s recent car upgrades and the team’s hard work.
“I was really happy with that. It was a perfect result and a nice way to reward the team,” Norris said on track. “We’ve got a lot of new upgrades on the car. It’s nice to feel some grip again. It’s great to reward the guys and the girls who have put so much work into it. It’s a good result for us, but it’s still the beginning of the weekend. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s nice to kick it off by doing this.”
Norris is the first driver this season to deny Mercedes the top spot in a qualifying race, showcasing his strong performance and the competitiveness of the McLaren team. Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, came in second, just 0.017 seconds behind Norris. Oscar Piastri, also from McLaren, will start third, closely following Antonelli.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will join the Australian on the second row for the 19-lap race on Saturday, local time. Max Verstappen managed to secure fifth place, narrowly edging out George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari will start sixth. Franco Colapinto, Isack Hadjar, and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10.
A Break in the Season
Since the Japanese Grand Prix in March, there has been no racing in Formula 1, as the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races were called off due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. This break has allowed teams to focus on development and preparation for upcoming events.
Oscar Piastri, who had a challenging start to the season, found his rhythm in Japan after struggling in Melbourne and Shanghai. In Suzuka, the 25-year-old made a strong comeback, finishing as the runner-up to Mercedes ace Kimi Antonelli. This performance demonstrated his potential and resilience.
McLaren’s Upgrades Pay Off
Norris expressed confidence in his McLaren’s performance on the track, noting that the upgrades introduced for this weekend clearly worked. McLaren brought a major upgrade package to the race, similar to what most other teams on the grid did, although Mercedes did not.
“We’ve known that this track has always been good to us, but we knew that what we were bringing was hopefully going to be a good step. So it’s nice that our estimations have proved correct,” Norris said. “Since the first lap today, I’ve felt comfortable and I thought, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bit of rear grip.’ It’s good to start the weekend with a pole.”
The Main Grand Prix
The main grand prix, which is the fourth round of the season, will take place on Sunday (Monday morning AEST). Fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the event, with high expectations for both the sprint race and the main competition.
