Injuries pile up as NSW Blues and Roosters face major setback

NSW Blues Face Major Challenges Ahead of State of Origin Opener

The NSW Blues are set to face a difficult task as they prepare for the opening match of the State of Origin series on May 27. Two key players have joined an increasing number of injured athletes, forcing the team to reassess their strategy and selection.

During a thrilling victory over the Brisbane Broncos, the Sydney Roosters suffered a significant setback when Mark Nawaqanitawase sustained a severe ankle injury. The 25-year-old is expected to undergo surgery following a diagnosis of syndesmosis. Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed the news after the match, stating, “It’s syndesmosis, he looks like he’ll have an operation.”

Nawaqanitawase had been making a strong case for a spot in the Origin squad after his impressive performances during Australia’s Ashes tour last year. His absence will be a major blow to both the Roosters and the Blues.

Compounding the situation, veteran player Angus Crichton is also in doubt for the first game due to a knee injury. The 30-year-old, who is set to move to rugby union at the end of the season, has reportedly damaged his medial collateral ligament (MCL). Robinson mentioned that scans are being conducted to determine the extent of the injury.

“We’re having a look at that to see where he’s at, so he’s getting scans now,” Robinson said.

The Blues’ depth is under serious pressure as more players are sidelined. Canterbury’s Jacob Kiraz is out for several weeks due to a knee issue, while Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic has been ruled out for at least another six weeks. This has left the competition for positions in the team even more intense.

Penrith Panthers’ Brian To’o is almost certain to secure one wing position, but the other spot remains highly contested. South Sydney’s Campbell Graham and Parramatta’s Josh Addo-Carr are strong contenders for the role. However, several other promising prospects are also vying for a place in the lineup.

Manly’s Tolu Koula brings blistering speed and valuable big-game experience. Wests Tigers’ Sunia Turuva and Penrith’s Tom Jenkins, who currently leads the NRL in try-scoring, are also in the running. Casey McLean, another Panthers player with international experience for New Zealand, adds to the list of potential candidates.

“If the phone call arose I wouldn’t turn it down,” McLean said to NRL.com if he received the call from Daley.

With the game one squads set to be announced in just two weeks, Blues coach Laurie Daley faces a tough decision as he tries to assemble a winning team from an already challenging injury list.
