The Met Gala: A Night of Glamour, Mystery, and Exclusivity
The Met Gala is often considered the most anticipated event on celebrities’ social calendars. Since its inception in the late 1940s, it has remained a symbol of high fashion, art, and exclusivity. As the first Monday of May approaches, the stars are once again set to grace the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for what is famously known as “fashion’s biggest night.” The 2026 Met Gala promises to be an unforgettable event, but behind the scenes, there are still many questions that linger.
What is the Purpose of the Met Gala?
While many may see the Met Gala as a chance for Hollywood’s elite to show off their wealth and style, it serves a more practical purpose. It is the primary source of funding for the Met’s Costume Institute. Traditionally timed to coincide with the museum’s Spring Fashion Exhibition, the event is, at its core, a massive fundraiser.
The Costume Institute is dedicated to collecting, conserving, and studying over 33,000 fashion objects and accessories, which together represent seven centuries of fashion history. Each year, the Met Gala raises tens of millions of dollars to support this department. This financial backing ensures that the institute can continue its vital work in preserving and showcasing the evolution of fashion through the ages.
What is This Year’s Theme?
The theme of the Met Gala is always closely tied to the official dress code. For 2026, the theme is “Costume Art,” with the dress code encouraging guests to interpret clothing as a form of creativity. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the theme will focus on Western art from prehistory to the present. This means that the event will explore depictions of the dressed body across the museum’s curatorial departments, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years.
This theme is especially fitting as it will also inaugurate the new Condé Nast Galleries, a nearly 12,000-square-foot space dedicated to the Costume Institute. If attendees meet the brief, we can expect to see looks that blur the lines between wearable garments and fine art, with dramatic silhouettes, anatomical designs, and artistic textures taking center stage.
Can Anyone Buy a Ticket?
Short answer: no. The Met Gala is not open to the public, and one cannot simply buy a ticket to attend. The event is highly exclusive and reserved for a select few. Attendance is strictly by invitation-only, and guest lists are carefully curated by none other than former Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
How Much Does It Cost to Attend?
The cost of attending the Met Gala is nothing short of astronomical. While individual tickets can reach around $139,000, tables often exceed $480,000. These prices are typically purchased by brands looking to host celebrities. This is a far cry from the original ticket price, which was a much more modest $70.
What Actually Happens Inside?
Despite the countless fittings and early-morning makeovers, what guests wear on the red carpet is often not what they choose to wear inside the event. According to former Met Gala dinner server Mike Hartman, some celebrities had personal rooms to themselves during the 2018 event, allowing them to change or fix up their outfits after the photo-ops.
Anna Wintour also plays a key role in the seating plan, implementing a strict no-couples seating policy. Couples are generally not allowed to sit next to each other, and guests cannot request a plus one unless pre-approved by Wintour.
Once inside, the event begins with mingling and art-viewing, followed by a highly secretive performance that remains under wraps until the moment it takes the stage.
What Items or Behaviours Are Banned?
The Met Gala is known for its strict rules. Phones and selfies are a big no-no, although celebrities often find ways around this rule using the so-called “bathroom loophole.” The toilets have become a tolerated VIP area where rules are bent due to the private nature of the space.
Food is also heavily regulated. Ingredients such as onion, garlic, and parsley are prohibited to avoid bad breath, and bruschetta is off the menu to prevent spills on guests’ outfits.
Which Celebrities Have Been Blacklisted?
Two celebrities are confirmed as persona non grata at the Met Gala: US President Donald Trump and Project Runway host Tim Gunn.
Donald Trump remains the only celebrity that Anna Wintour has personally admitted to blacklisting, stating during a 2017 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden that she would never allow him back. He last attended the event in 2012, before his presidential campaign began.
Tim Gunn confirmed his own ban, revealing he was permanently disinvited after sharing an unflattering anecdote about Wintour. Other celebrities rumored to have been barred include Gwyneth Paltrow, Tina Fey, Zayn Malik, and Josh Hartnett.
