AFL probes Lions player over homophobic comment

Investigation into Homophobic Remark in VFL

The Brisbane Lions and the Australian Football League (AFL) have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway following an incident involving a homophobic remark during a VFL match over the weekend. The player involved, Koby Evans, has been identified as the individual who made the alleged comment during his team’s clash with Coburg.

The AFL released a statement regarding the matter, saying: “We have been made aware of a matter arising from the VFL round 6 match between Coburg and the Brisbane Lions, which has been referred to the AFL Integrity Unit.”

The Brisbane Lions have expressed their concern about the incident and stated that Evans is “extremely remorseful” for his actions. In a statement, the club said: “The club is aware of the incident and has been working with Coburg and the AFL on it. The player has apologised multiple times – on the field and again post match. The player is extremely remorseful and takes full responsibility. The club is disappointed the incident has occurred, while supporting and educating the player.”

Evans was selected with pick 38 of the 2025 national draft, highlighting his potential within the league. However, this incident has brought attention to ongoing issues of discrimination within the sport.

This is not the first time a homophobic slur has been reported in the VFL this season. St Kilda’s Lance Collard was recently suspended after being found guilty of making a slur towards former teammate Darby Hipwell. The situation led to significant backlash, including the sacking of appeals board chairman Will Houghton, who had previously stated that racist, sexist, or homophobic language was “commonplace” in Australian football.

In addition, Adelaide’s Izak Rankine received a four-match suspension last year for a homophobic remark, further emphasizing the need for continued education and awareness within the sport.

Recent Incidents and Reactions

  • St Kilda’s Lance Collard: Suspended for a homophobic slur against a former teammate. The incident led to the resignation of appeals board chairman Will Houghton.
  • Adelaide’s Izak Rankine: Received a four-match suspension for a homophobic remark in the previous season.
  • Brisbane Lions’ Koby Evans: Identified as the player who made a homophobic remark during a VFL match. The club has confirmed he is remorseful and has taken full responsibility.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the AFL and its affiliated leagues in addressing discriminatory behavior. While the league has taken steps to investigate and address such matters, there is a clear need for stronger measures to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all players and fans.

The AFL Integrity Unit plays a crucial role in handling such cases, and their involvement in this latest incident demonstrates the seriousness with which the league treats these matters. The club’s response to Evans’ actions also shows a commitment to accountability and support for the player, while sending a strong message against discriminatory behavior.

As the investigation continues, it is essential for the AFL and its clubs to remain vigilant and proactive in promoting respect and inclusivity throughout the sport. This includes not only addressing incidents when they occur but also implementing educational programs to prevent such behavior in the future.
