New TV Series to Uncover Princess Diana’s Hidden Thoughts
A groundbreaking TV series titled Diana: The Unheard Truth is set to reveal the personal and intimate thoughts of Princess Diana, as captured in audio tapes recorded during the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles. This three-episode series will offer a unique glimpse into the princess’s life, based on five hours of secret recordings made in 1991.
The tapes were created by Dr James Colthurst, a close friend of Diana, who smuggled them out of Kensington Palace and delivered them to author Andrew Morton. These recordings became the foundation for Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story, published the following year. The new series, which will air in August 2027 to mark the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, aims to bring her voice to the public in an unprecedented way.
Until now, only a fraction of the tapes—less than one hour—has been shared with the public. On these recordings, Diana discusses her first meeting with Charles and the evolution of their relationship before it fell apart. Production firm Love Monday TV has partnered with Morton and Dr Colthurst to gain exclusive access to the tapes. Alongside the audio tapes, the series will feature interviews with individuals who were close to Diana. Among them is Delissa Needham, a prep schoolmate who has never appeared on camera before. She will share her insights into the late princess, alongside hairdresser Sam McKnight and confidant Penny Thornton.
The secret recordings were made after ten years of marriage to Charles, when their relationship was clearly on the rocks. Diana decided to record her thoughts in deeply personal conversations, offering an unparalleled insight into her life as a member of the royal family.

Morton has previously shared how Diana spoke about her misery and even revealed self-inflicted death attempts and her struggles with bulimia. She also discussed Queen Camilla for the first time, passing along letters written by the couple. The publication of his book caused a scandal, with criticism from the Archbishop of Canterbury and some bookshops refusing to sell the work.

In 2022, Morton told the Daily Mail how he was “with mounting astonishment” when he first heard the tapes. He described the “tale of woe” that Diana shared.
