Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s senior pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, highlighted the importance of taking wickets quickly as the team’s best chance to defeat Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026. Despite their loss by four wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Kumar emphasized that the defending champions needed a different strategy to secure a win.
Focusing on Wickets Over Run Defenses
Kumar pointed out that the conditions were favorable for seamers, with Romario Shepherd and Suyash Sharma playing key roles. “We wanted to take a chance. Suyash is someone who is not easy to pick. We wanted to get wickets as quickly as possible,” he said. He also mentioned that Krunal Pandya wasn’t bowled because the team believed in using their best bowlers to take crucial wickets.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t have won the match by defending runs. We could have won by taking wickets, and the bowlers who bowled were the best to get those wickets,” Kumar explained.
Batting Unit’s Performance
Despite the team’s strong batting unit, Kumar admitted that they fell short of their usual standards. “It’s a long tournament with 14 matches. You can’t be perfect in every match. Our batting has been good overall, and we’ve scored over 200 runs in several games.”
He added, “I think it’s about complementing each other. Yes, we weren’t up to the mark with the bat, but it happens. Sometimes we give 200 runs, but the batsmen never complain—they go and chase it out. So it was our duty to try our best and then we did what we could.”
Impact of Dew Conditions
Kumar also discussed the impact of dew on the game. “If you look at this IPL, chasing is a bit easier in any ground because of the way the wicket behaves and the dew comes. So, yes, it could be different. But we didn’t win the toss. We were asked to bat first. We tried our best in bowling. So now the result is that we lost, and that’s all.”
Individual and Team Goals
When asked about individual awards, Kumar expressed his focus on contributing to the team’s success. “Of course, when you’re young, you want to win those awards, and it comes when you do well. But when you work towards the team’s goal and get an individual award or reward, you feel good. But honestly, I’m just trying my best, getting confidence from the management, and that’s all I can say.”
