Gold Coast defender Sam Clohesy has received a two-match suspension from the AFL following a controversial tackle on Greater Western Sydney player Ryan Angwin. The incident occurred during the third quarter of a recent match, where Clohesy tackled Angwin to the ground. During the play, Clohesy pinned one of Angwin’s arms, and as the ball was released, Angwin’s head struck the ground.
The 23-year-old GWS player appeared dazed after the collision and had to leave the field for medical evaluation. He did not return to the game due to concussion protocols. The Match Review Officer (MRO) reviewed the incident and issued a formal ruling on Monday.
According to the MRO’s statement, “Clohesy executed a dangerous tackle and breached the duty of care owed to Angwin, therefore engaging in a careless act.” The officer noted that while a careless act causing a concussion typically results in a severe impact grading, there were specific factors in this case that aligned more with a lesser impact.
As a result, the incident was classified as “careless conduct, high impact, high contact,” leading to a two-match suspension for Clohesy.
In addition to Clohesy’s suspension, Gold Coast forward Ben Long has been fined $1500 for two separate infractions: one for striking and another for misconduct. These incidents occurred during the fourth quarter of the same match against GWS’ Clayton Oliver. Both fines can be reduced to $1000 if an early plea is made.
Meanwhile, Sydney’s Tom Papley and Melbourne midfielder Jack Steele have each received a $1500 fine for their involvement in a melee or wrestling incident during the fourth quarter of the Swans-Dees clash. Similar to Long’s case, both fines can also be lowered to $1000 with an early plea.
