Dani Ceballos and Real Madrid’s Internal Struggles
A recent incident involving Dani Ceballos has sparked significant attention within the Real Madrid camp. The midfielder reportedly informed Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa not to contact him after a heated confrontation at the club’s training ground. This development comes amid growing tensions between Ceballos and the coaching staff, raising questions about his future at the club.
Ceballos had requested a meeting with Arbeloa last week, following his lack of appearances since returning from injury in early April. According to reports, the two had an “unpleasant face-to-face meeting,” which further escalated existing tensions. Following this encounter, Ceballos reportedly told his teammates that he did not want Arbeloa to reach out to him again.
This move led to Ceballos being omitted from Real Madrid’s matchday squad for their game against Real Betis on Friday. The team ended up drawing 1-1 after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, which cost them crucial points in the league. This result allowed Barcelona to close the gap in the title race, as they secured a win over Getafe the following day.

Despite the conflict, Ceballos is expected to continue training with his teammates until the end of the season. However, he will not be included in the matchday squad for the final five league matches of the campaign. Reports suggest that Real Madrid believe Ceballos intentionally created the conflict with Arbeloa to justify his lack of playing time and potentially seek a move at the end of the season.
Ceballos currently has one year remaining on his contract with Real Madrid. He previously turned down a transfer to Marseille last summer, despite interest from Real Betis. The club is now seen as a potential destination for the 29-year-old, who began his professional career with Betis before moving to Real Madrid in 2017.
The situation has occurred amid speculation that Arbeloa may be replaced as Real Madrid manager at the end of the season. Arbeloa has been in charge since being promoted from the B-team following Xabi Alonso’s sacking in January. Under his leadership, Real Madrid have won 14 matches, drawn two, and lost seven. The team has struggled in the league and was eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid are now set to finish the season without any major trophies for the second consecutive year. Recent reports indicate that Jose Mourinho is the preferred choice of club president Florentino Perez to replace Arbeloa. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, guiding the team to one LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
At 63 years old, Mourinho is currently in charge of Benfica, having returned to the Portuguese club in September after a 25-year absence. Benfica have remained unbeaten in the league since his return, although they are seven points behind leaders Porto.
Reports suggest that Real Madrid would need to pay £2.6 million to activate a release clause in Mourinho’s contract, which runs until the summer of 2027. Despite this, Daily Mail Sport understands that Benfica have not yet received any formal approach from Real Madrid. However, Mourinho is reportedly interested in returning to the club.
There are concerns, however, about how fans might react if Mourinho takes charge again, especially considering the fallout from the clubs’ Champions League clash in February.
