The Met Gala and the Controversy Over Sponsorship
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, commonly known as the Met Gala, is one of the most anticipated events in the world of fashion and celebrity. This year, the event has sparked a significant amount of debate not just about the theme, but also about the sponsors who are backing it.
This year’s theme, “Costume Art,” is expected to inspire some of the most creative and extravagant looks from celebrities. However, what has captured public attention is the list of lead sponsors for the 2026 event. Among them is Jeff Bezos, the world’s third-richest man, and his wife, Lauren Sánchez, alongside major donors such as Condé Nast and Saint Laurent.
This sponsorship choice has broken a long-standing tradition. Historically, the primary sponsorship role has been held by major legacy fashion houses like Louis Vuitton. These houses have played a crucial role in shaping the artistic and sartorial direction of the gala.
Public Reaction and Protests
The decision has not been well received by everyone. Activists have launched a high-visibility poster campaign across New York City, urging a total boycott of the event. The protests, reportedly led by the British political group Everyone Hates Elon, target Bezos’ business practices and political ties.
One viral image features a plastic bottle filled with urine on a red carpet, referencing reports of Amazon delivery drivers allegedly being forced to skip bathroom breaks to meet quotas. A spokesperson for the group told AFP that “It feels powerful to take action,” noting that the group had raised £14,000 GBP to fund its campaign.
Impact on the Guest List
The controversy is also affecting the guest list, as rumors swirl that major stars, like Zendaya and Meryl Streep, are distancing themselves from this year’s Met Gala to protect their personal brands. New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is also breaking years of mayoral tradition and not attending the Met Gala this year.
“My focus is also on affordability and making the most expensive city in the United States affordable, and that’s what I’m looking to spend a lot of my time focused on,” he told Hell Gate.

Concerns About Influence
Another major point of contention revolves around the couple’s star-studded address book. As lead sponsors, Bezos and Sánchez have presumably influenced the approximately 450-person guest list. Given their extravagant Venice wedding last year — attended by figures like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashians, and even Ivanka Trump and actor Sydney Sweeney — some fear the gala’s seating chart may have become populated by politically aligned business magnates and figures known for their conservative leanings.
“Bezos like every right-wing billionaire continue their streaks buying up culture institutions, suffocating them of their authenticity, independence, and gatekeeping (idk if that’s the right word). Another pillar of culture slowly consolidating under one billionaire’s aesthetic, politics, and PR strategy,” one person shared on Instagram.
Cultural Domination Concerns
Another accusation includes that the couple is simply attempting to purchase their way into these cultural spaces. Some argue that this decision highlights a darker reality where the stages, institutions and even the media that shape public culture are increasingly being dictated by a handful of ultra-wealthy players.
“Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos sponsoring the Met Gala. Booo!!!!! They’re really using Condé Nast to shoehorn their way into every space,” one user wrote on X.
“It was inevitable that Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sánchez Bezos, thirsty for cultural domination, would sink their claws into the Met Gala via sponsorship. Their entire media rollout has been leading to this exact moment. When THAT purchase announcement comes next… don’t act shocked,” another wrote.
For many observers, this sponsorship is not just a commercial arrangement but a strategic cultural play, signaling a shift where immense wealth can now directly dictate access to and control over one of the most revered institutions in the art and fashion world.
