Walsh Feels Envious of Broncos’ Triumph Without Him

Reece Walsh’s Return and the Broncos’ Journey

Reece Walsh, a standout fullback for the Brisbane Broncos, has been feeling a bit envious of the team’s recent success while he was sidelined, according to coach Michael Maguire. As the superstar prepares for a swift return from injury, his anticipation is palpable.

Walsh recently met with a specialist, and the results have cleared him to play against the Sydney Roosters. This comes four weeks after he suffered a facial fracture during a match against Gold Coast in round five. The injury initially had him facing up to six weeks on the sidelines, but he managed to miss only three games.

Walsh was eager to return even earlier than expected. “He wanted to come back last week,” Maguire said. “He’s got ticks from everyone that has an opinion around that, from the medical guys, and they’ve all said he’s ready to go.”

The Broncos have faced a personnel crisis lately, with several key players missing due to injuries or suspensions. Names like Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, Ben Hunt, and Adam Reynolds have been affected over the past month. However, despite these challenges, the team has shown resilience by securing narrow victories against the Wests Tigers and defeating Canterbury, who were semi-finalists last year.

This performance has made Walsh eager to get back on the field. “He’s obviously been a bit jealous, probably, being able to watch the team go about the things they’ve done the last couple of weeks,” Maguire explained. He also mentioned that Carrigan is back from suspension this week.

Walsh’s return coincides with the comeback of his main rival for Queensland’s fullback jersey, Kalyn Ponga from Newcastle, who is returning from a hamstring issue. A knee injury previously prevented Walsh from playing in the first two State of Origin matches last year, although he did appear as a replacement in the third game.

With three rounds remaining before the Origin teams are selected, Maguire expressed confidence in Walsh’s ability to secure a starting position. “I know who I’d pick, and that’d be Reecy,” he said.

The Broncos will face the Sydney Roosters, a team on a four-game winning streak. They recently defeated St George Illawarra 62-16 on Anzac Day, scoring a total of 167 points in the process.

“We want to keep pushing our game forward, the hunger to do that is high,” said coach Trent Robinson.

Mild-mannered Roosters winger Daniel Tupou is close to surpassing Billy Slater’s record of 190 tries, standing just two short of becoming the third-most prolific try-scorer in league history. “You’d have to remind ‘Tups’ that he’s that, and it’s probably an insight into the way he views his game,” Robinson remarked. “All he’s doing is doing his role, he’s really clear on what a left winger should do in the game, and he’s going about performing that.”
